Met Gala 2018 tonight!
looking forward, and backwards, at the fashion event of the year
May 7th, 2018
Tonight its time for what many consider to be the most prestigious fashion event of the year, referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” it is, of course, the Met Gala of 2018.
Having one of the most exclusive guest lists around, it features the who’s who of models, musicians, actors, and industry heavyweights. Last years gala saw the attendance of Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Bella & Gigi Hadid, A$AP Rocky, Kylie Jenner, Alexander Wang, and Emily Ratajkowski to mention just a few. The list has been personally overseen since 1995 by legendary Vogue editor, Anna Wintour, though with her announced departure from Vogue this year, her future role in the event is up for speculation. For those not on the list who’d still like a chance to attend the exclusive event, a minimum $40’000 price tag is attached to a ticket, increased by an additional $10’000 in 2014 to make the event even more exclusive. A table at the event now goes for $364'500! A designer will usually purchase the table and then invite a gang of A-list celebrities to attend as guests of the brand.
Famous for showing us some of the best and worst fashion moments of the year, we look forward, giving you all the details for the night, and also take a look back at some of its most memorable moments.
In its essence a fundraiser for New York’s Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, starting in 1948 it marks the opening of the institute's annual fashion exhibit, with its accompanying theme for the year, that also signifies the theme for the gala nights formal dress. Though exactly how this theme is manifested by attendees or not, has become an equal part of the gala’s history, often spawning some of craziest dressed fashion moments, and viral memes for the year. With this years theme being "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, we can only imagine the potential for controversy and expect some rather interesting outfits for sure.
“We know it could be controversial for right wing or conservative Catholics and for liberal Catholics,” Andrew Bolton, the exhibition’s Head curator told The New York Times.
The theme is intended to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterpieces of religious art history, the coming exhibition features designs from Coco Chanel, John Galliano, and Cristóbal Balenciaga, along with 40 pieces on loan from the Vatican. Centred around the prestigious loan of the papal garb, which has never been seen outside of the Vatican’s walls.
Looking back at some the Gala's most iconic fashion moments, who can forget Rihanna’s Omelette, Kim's Crystals, and Gigi’s (none) dress..
