Why is taboo a trend?
From PornHub and Diesel to JW Anderson
February 26th, 2018
Taboo: interdiction or prohibition to have contact with certain people, to attend certain places, to feed on certain foods, to pronounce certain words, and sim., imposed for reasons of respect, for ritual, hygienic, decency or other reasons reasons (via Treccani).
A few generations ago this word was not even pronounced, social taboos there were and everyone knew about them, but they did not discuss, they were just avoided and stop.
2018: the forbidden becomes a trend, the prohibition is no longer law, porn becomes fashion.
Explaining how it happened is even simple: just think about how, in today's days, the taboos still exist - obviously - but unlike a few years ago, they are dealt with, discussed and so..."the taboos are no longer taboo". The much-acclaimed 21st century's "open mind" has allowed us to see sex as something "everyday" and therefore no longer a subject that generates smiles or embarrassment. And with magic, this world has submerged itself in that great universe, powerful and rich, which is the fashion system. Fashion and porn are going together, they have shaken hands, ready to help each other.
This is confirmed by the recent PornHub pop-up store opened in Milan in one of the coolest streets of the metropolis, a shop where, for a limited time, it was possible to buy gadgets made specifically by the third most famous adult site in the world. And among the best-selling items there were obviously the logo t-shirts, which automatically became public domain and presented as streetwear cult item (and not as silly t-shirts worn by "curious" 15-year-olds).
Do you want another example? How to forget the incredible success of the Diesel advertising campaign, which appeared in 2016 not only on the main fashion magazines but also on PornHub and YouPorn. Renzo Rosso, founder of the brand, declared:
"Diesel advertising on porn sites was a success and led to a 31 percent increase."
Do not expect pornographic images, there was nothing new compared to what we are used to observe in magazines or on the billboards of the buildings. Bare-chested man in underwear. End. Are you shocked? I do not believe.
"Fashion is a sensual platform" said the well-known designer Jonathan Anderson who, a few years ago, presented live streaming his FW16 collection on the Grindr, the homosexual dating app. Anderson added that he does not find a difference between Grindr and other social platforms like Tinder or Instagram, since all these applications are aimed at communication, so why do not take advantage of it?
We could cite other cases, such as the historic brand PlayBoy that merges sex, fashion and journalism, but certainly one thing must be said: this is just the beginning. The taboo attracts, just like fashion, so the consequence is only one.
