Donatella's tribute to her brother Gianni
September 25th, 2017
For some, the past is heritage, tradition, for someone else is DNA (of the brand), but for Donatella Versace is much more. It's family. It's the blood flowing in her veins.
The symbiotic bond with her brother shaped her life and above all her idea of fashion and style.
So it seems natural to see in the proposal for SS18 replicated the cult pieces from the collection designed by Gianni: Vogue, Warhol, My Friend Elton, Icons, Baroque, Animalia, Native Americans, Tresor de la Mer, Metal Mesh, Butterflies.
“Gianni’s creations are of great inspiration even today, the girls, the It-girl, were asking me about the original garments. [The show] does not want to be a nostalgic revisiting of the archives, but the contemporary interpretation of the brand, its codes, also to raise awareness of the genius of Gianni also to future generations.”
And how to homage the creativity of a genius of fashion history?
For Donatella, the answer is to revive, even for a few minutes, the nineties, one of the golden era of the maison.
In the background, George Michael sings Freedom.
On the catwalk Cindy Crawford, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Helena Christensen posing as shots in the legendary Richard Avedon.
In front of them, still beautiful, alternates today’s girls, from Kaia Gerber (daughter of Crawford) to Vittoria Ceretti, from Hadid's sisters to Kendall Jenner wearing iconic dresses such as Baroque prints of FW 1991, shells and starfish of SS92 or the SS91 Warhol pop.
Versace brings us back in time, without falling into nostalgia and, standing ovation in the front row of three of the most talented designers of the moment Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino, Anthony Vaccarello Saint Laurent and Gucci Alessandro Michele.
