Sofia Coppola quits The Little Mermaid
Coppola leaves the production citing creative differences
June 3rd, 2015
When one year ago the Universal Pictures decided to bring on the big screen a modern version of Hans Christian Andersen most popular fairytale, Sofia Coppola seemed like the most natural choice to direct the movie. The style of the director of The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette appeared perfect to give new life to the Disney classic, but this plan will never see the light: Coppola has dropped out the project because of creative differences, leaving the Studios in desperate search for a (worthy) substitute. At the moment the only confirmed members of the production are the screenwriter Caroline Thompson (Edward Shissorhands, The Addams Family) and androgynous model Andreja Pejic in the role of one of the Mermaid sisters.
It seems that Hollywood was looking for a more macabre approach on the story. Will Tim Burton be the chosen one to direct this iconic masterpiece?
