Contemporary Photography in India

 Bhumika Bhatia è una giovane fotografa indiana di 22 anni. Ha iniziato a fotografare 2 anni e mezzo fa, seduta sul sedile posteriore della macchina di suo cugino. Si ricorda che il cielo era impressionante e stava iniziando a piovere. Erano le sue primissime foto e uscirono particolarmente bene, così continuò a fotografare. E mentre gli altri pensarono che fosse solo una fase, forse una fase adolescenziale, lei era già convinta che era quello che voleva fare per il resto della sua vita. 

La sua prima mostra "Sublunary World" la fece all età di 19 anni. Dopo seguirono altre mostre a Londra, Parigi e in giro per il mondo. Lei stessa dice: "There are many mysterious and wild places on this earth we are not aware of. They may be right in front of you, one has to run wild and free to feel it. I try to capture it." 

Dice che ha sempre saputo di essere nata per un motivo. Ha sempre sognato un mondo straordinario, pieno di fantasia e romanticismo, con alberi surreali e nuvole rosa. Un altra citazione sua è: "Con la fotografia cerco si catturare i miei sogni!" Per lei la macchina fotografica è un oggetto con il quale riesce a catturare un mondo tutto suo, visto dai suoi occhi.

In alcune foto infatti riesce a creare delle situazioni bellissime, cogliere quegli attimi speciali. Momenti particolari o paesaggi mistici, tipici del suo paese.

Il suo lavoro principale consiste in ritratti di donne indiane. Guardando le sue foto su google, sul suo profilo flickr o su facebook noto una differenza di stile tra alcune immagini ed altre. Alcune hanno quello stile suo, semplice, ogni tanto un pò grezzo per via della fotografia in pellicola. Le foto per le quali secondo me è riuscita a farsi un nome, siccome veramente belle. Le altre purtroppo hanno quello stile bollywoodiano, molto kitsch.

Bhumika Bhatia is a 22 year old photographer from India. Photography for her began 2.5 years ago while sitting in the back seat of her cousin’s car.  She remembers that it was about to rain and the weather was amazing. Luckily the first picture she ever clicked turned out to be good. Everybody thought that it was a teenage phase and would  fade away in a month or so. But Bhumika convinced them that she wants to take pictures for the rest of her life.

Her first exhibition "Sublunary World" was at the age of 19. And soon others followed in Paris, London and around the world. Bhumika says: "There are many mysterious and wild places on this earth we are not aware of. They may be right infront of you, one has to run wild and free to feel it. I try to capture it."

She always had visions that she was here for a purpose. Always dreamt of a world where everything was extraordinary, with a hint of fantasy and romanticism, with surreal trees and purple clouds. She says that with photography she tries to capture her dreams. For her, the camera is an object with what she can capture the world that she sees with her eyes.

In fact in some photos she creates beautiful situations, particular moments or mystical landscapes, typical for her country.

Her main work are portraits of Indian women. Looking at her pictures on google, flickr or on her facebook profile I notice a difference of style between some images and others. Some of them have that very simple touch, sometimes a little rough as she photographs with film. Probably the photos that made her famous, as they are very good. The others, unfortunately have a very kitsch Bollywood style influence.
