The €100 million project that will revolutionize the south of Milan
The redevelopment will be curated by Rem Koolhaas' studio and Laboratorio Permanente
July 2nd, 2021
Plans to transform Milan into a smart & green city continue with a grandiose project for the redevelopment of the Giambellino-Lorenteggio area with the Scalo San Cristoforo together with that of Scalo Farini (further north, near Isola), two areas that will both become parks. The plan will see the demolition and reconstruction of 5 of the area's 31 condos, asbestos removal from about 300 homes as well as the implementation of rows of trees along the tram route, new sidewalks and walks, huge green areas, and bike paths that connect to San Cristoforo station and the rest of the city.
Two new M4 metro stations will also arrive with two stations while OMA, the architecture firm of Rem Koolhas, and Laboratorio Permanente will transform the disused areas of the Scalo San Cristoforo railway, which measure 140,000 square meters, into a park equipped with a lake-purification tank. Both will be ecological filters: the trees of the park will cool the warm winds coming from the southwest, purifying the air; the large reservoir of water instead will clean the underground aquifers. There will also be a new library designed by Grau Magaña Urtzi and the Largo Giambellino area will become a cultural park. In short, the idea is to redeem the aerial i.ntera, which constitutes a large part of South Milan, from its status as a district-dormitory and bring it back to new life.
