As the sixth instalment in the series of artistic collaborations entitled SELF produced by Saint Laurent, there will be an autobiographical film by Abel Ferrara named Sportin' Life that will be screened at the Venice Film Festival tomorrow, September 5. The director author of films such as Pasolini, Go Go Tales, Ultracorpi, Body Snatchers and The Bad Lieutenant has made a documentary about his life starring his wife, Cristina Chiriac, and his frequent collaborator, Willem Dafoe.
The film represents a commentary on today's society from an artist's point of view, while emphasizing the psychological complexity of the various individuals and evoking Saint Laurent's aesthetics. With this documentary, Ferrara explores the origins and history of his creative journey – that of an artist who never compromises even in the face of controversy. Commenting on the release of the film Ferrara explained:
« The subject of my new documentary is the relationship I have to my work, to Willem Dafoe, and my music and art. These relationships are the starting point and I could not avoid facing what the world went through this year with the pandemic».
Saint Laurent's SELF series, after its multi-disciplinary projects with Daido Moriyama, Vanessa Beecroft, Bret Easton Ellis, Gaspar Noé and Wong Kar Wai with Wing Shya, remains one of the most interesting collective artistic collaborations this year, inserted as it is in the circle of international film festivals. The project in collaboration with Gaspar Noé, the film Lux Aeterna, in fact, had been presented at the 2019 edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
