The Virgil Abloh x IKEA collection has been unveiled
Dedicated to the millennials that are building their first home
June 7th, 2018
Since the IKEA x OFF-WHITE collaboration was announced in June last year, the curiosity and the hype surrounding this partnership has increased more and more.
Fortunately, every now and then on the various social accounts of the interesting subjects, there's been images teased of possible prototypes.
The first and certainly most talked about piece presented was the Frakta bag, reinterpreted in a caramel hue, reminiscent of the raw cardboard boxes of IKEA furniture.
Then a series of carpets appeared with slogans such as "BLUE", "WET GRASS" or "KEEP OFF"; but, in recent weeks, there was an article that in particular attracted attention: a chair made by the designer of Off-White that according to many (Diet Prada included) seems almost identical to another created in the 50s by Paul McCobb for his Planner Group series.
Now, finally, the collection, entitled Markerad, has been unveiled in its entirety at the IKEA Democratic Design Day at its headquarters in Älmhult, Sweden, and in addition to the furniture already shown, includes a table, a chaise longue, a coffee table, and shelving.
The collection will be available and accessible to all, but was designed, above all, for the millennials that are building their first home.
“We’re looking at that first phase of adult life, when you start making purchases for your space. Largely people grow up in their parents’ environment. They’ve never had to consider furniture, then when they’re off on their own and have their own aesthetic, what are their first purchases? I’m interested in thinking about how those purchases are informed.” Abloh said in a statement
Although the IKEA x OFF-WHITE collection won't arrive in stores until 2020, official prices have already emerged.
The table will cost €279, the chairs €69.95, the chaise longue €99.95, the cushion for the chaise longue €99.95 and the extra pillows from € 9.99 to €12.99, the carpet "WET GRASS "€229, the carpet for the receipts will be €59, the "distortion" mirror €159, the Mona Lisa €49, the €24.95 watch, the small "SCULPTURE" brown bag will cost €9.99 and the larger €12.99.
