La storia più bizzarra e incredibile dietro una T-Shirt Supreme

Facciamola facile, ci siamo imbattuti nella storia più improbabile e assurda legata a Supreme.
È necessaria però una premessa, non prendete ciò che vi raccontiamo come oro colato vi riportiamo soltanto ciò che è venuto fuori grazie all'account Instagram Supreme Copies, un vero e proprio archivio di tutti i riferimenti e le ispirazioni del brand di New York.

Per raccontare questa storia dobbiamo tornare indietro di 48 anni, siamo in Olanda nel 1970 e un'allegra famigliola decide che è arrivato il momento di un bel servizio fotografico e a scattarlo sarà il vicino di casa con la passione per la fotografia. Tra le fotografie scattate ce n'è una molto particolare, diversa dalle altre. Un primo piano di una bambina che piange, evidentemente infastidita, impaurita o semplicemente un po' capricciosa che quella foto proprio non voleva scattarla. Il risultato invece è pazzesco, una foto bellissima e nello stesso tempo semplice, e sappiamo tutti che il vero segreto della bellezza sta nella semplicità.
Un paio di giorni fa l'account Instagram Supreme Copies posta in una delle sue stories la "Cry Baby" tee del 2015 non aspettandosi minimamente quello che poi avrebbe scoperto. Un follower della pagina contatta gli amministratori della stessa affermando che quella bambina che piange sulla photo tee è sua sorella e che quella foto era parte di un servizio fotografico scattato dal suo vicino di casa in Olanda nel 1970, inviando anche delle foto a sostegno della sua tesi.

Over the course of running this page, many pieces to many puzzles have come together thanks to my followers. Every now and then I get a bizarre story in my DMs regarding Supremes more obscure references. This is by far the the strangest one yet. After posting on my story yesterday, many people were asking for a proper write up, so here it is. A follower of mine reached out to me stating that a photo of their sister had been used for the ‘Cry Baby,’ tee in 2015. Being that this graphic never had its origins properly traced, I had him send more information. The ‘Cry Baby,’ photograph was apart of a family photo shoot taken back over 40 years ago in 1970. The photographer was simply the families neighbor in Holland; my follower was too young at the time to remember his name, along with the rest of the family forgetting somewhere along the 48 year period. The photographs from the shoot have been in the family house forever, and pictured in the bottom left corner is the original scan of the image (not just a cropped graphic). Now how Supreme acquired this image is the mystery. Did the photographer become successful at some point during these 48 years and have the Cry Baby image a part of his portfolio, which Supreme then licensed and used unaccredited? Supreme has been known to use stock images or even unlicensed artwork as well so there’s always a possibility they never even reached out to the photographer when stumbling across the image. While this post may not cover the ‘why,’ and ‘who,’ to the reference (as in why put a crying baby on a tee and who did it first), it’s really awesome that the page has gotten to this point to where even family photo shoots from nearly 50 years ago can be tracked down as a reference , and they know exactly who to reach when it is. Per tutto questo tempo le foto sono rimaste in quella casa olandese, e nessun membro ancora in vita della famiglia ricorda il nome del fotografo che ha scattato quelle foto. Come Supreme sia arrivata ad imbattersi in quella bambina che piange resta un mistero, potrebbe darsi che il fotografo in questione in questi anni abbia avuto successo, inserito la foto nel suo portfolio e poi Supreme l'abbia utilizzata senza accreditarlo ma dato che il brand fondato da James Jebbia è solito utilizzare immagini d'archivio o prive di licenza, pensiamo sia plausibile che chi abbia scattato quella foto sia all'oscuro di tutto, nel caso sia ancora vivo.
Noi continueremo a seguire la vicenda nei suoi eventuali sviluppi e vi terremo aggiornati nel caso in cui venissero fuori altri pezzi di questa storia alquanto curiosa.
