Raf Simons

Painter Vassily Kandinsky in his famous writing “Concerning the Spiritual in Art” speaks about how art- like every other form of creative expression- evolves following a precise scheme, similar to a pyramid. On the edge we find revolutionaries, few enliightened creative minds whose mission is to bring authentic innovation and research to art. Then ,as one proceeds from the top of the pyraind to its bottom, a larger amount of people sharing less inovative and ground-breaking ideas will be found. As time passes the new ideas once introduced by the artists on the top of the pyramid, slowly make their way to the bottom and become more usual and shared by a larger and ever-growing amount of people. This is, according to Kandinsky, the process that slowly turns ideas from being edgy to being common, while, on the edge of the pyramid the process of innovation never stops. Raf Simons has always been on the edge of fashion creative pyramid. His unique capatity to innovate and forecast made him- and a small group of other designers- the spiritual fathers of contemporary fashion. Raf Simons was actually almost 20 years ahed of fashion. Through the years his vision of fashion has become really popular and countless designers took inspiration out of Raf’s work or paid homage to his creativity in some way.
