What a style in the MLS!
New Sport Side
March 2nd, 2016
Looking at it from this side of the ocean, there are two MLS: the MLS before David Beckham and the MLS after David Beckham. In between, the entire Beck's-era has brought with it revolutions, both mediatic and bureaucratic. The MLS (extended, Major League Soccer) is the top American football league and will start again next weekend. It is a relatively young league and still in process of formation: from next year two teams will be added - the Los Angeles FC and Altanta United FC - with the aim of reaching 28 instead of the current 20.
Some rules are very similar to those of the NBA, the two Conferences determine the finalists of the Playoffs, there is a ceiling of players a team can ration and a maximum cap to salaries. There is one exception: the Beckham rule, which generated the creation of the Designated Player, international stars whose salaries can exceed the cap. Each team can have up to three DP and thanks to this rule, for example, the New York Red Bulls were able to buy Thierry Henry a few years ago.
Made the presentations, we can now focus on the most attractive feature of the MLS off-season: the jerseys. Just like in the NBA, the attention to design and attention to every stylistic detail is obsessive. As in the NBA there is also a single sponsor for all teams, depending on the contract that the League has signed. For some years now is adidas. And the same adidas will introduce a beautiful revolution: the three stripes have been moved from the shoulder to the side of the shirt. So we start now to explore some of the most beautiful (and strangest) uniforms of the new season, making also the knowledge of some of the most anticipated team.
Last year Portland won the trophy, and it was its first ever. The Timbers have renewed the second shirt, keeping the colors red / blacks, but introducing horizontal stripes with red gradient. Always present on the inner collar the first team slogan "No Pity in the Rose City". Ah, it was also added perhaps more important detail: the champions star.
The second kit of the Vancouver Whitecaps also suffered a decisive and successful makeover. One of the three Canadian teams in the league seems to be on the podium of a virtual design chart. The "Sea to Sky" is the uniform inspired by the view from Highway 99, north section of historic Route 99, from where you can see the sea blend with the sky, in a color gradient from dark blue to an almost white celestine. The collar with buttons give this uniform the definitive plus.
The most glorious MLS team, the LA Galaxy, is prepared to share the city with the LA Fc. For this reason they have launched a new campaign, surrounded by the slogan "This is LA", also added on the uniform, and starred also Steve Gerrard.
One of the biggest color shock of the League has been the uniform of the Columbus Crew SC, the Ohio team that will debut right up against the defending champions, and in which plays Federico Higuain, the brother - although less talented – of Gonzalo. Abandoning the classic yellow black the Columbus Crew decided to pay homage in every way the town flag (which is depicted in a commemorative patch) using its primary colors (blue, red and especially yellow) to redesign their new alternate. A large portion of the fans seems to have taken it very well, and to defuse some of the criticism the players startes to read the "mean tweet" about it. #MeanTweets: #ForColumbus kit edition. #CrewSChttps://t.co/zk8yMSocu2
In MLS they are all waiting for the explosion of the New York City FC. For a variety of reasons: they represent the first true expansion experiment of a European team (Manchester City) overseas, are the first franchise to be located in the City after the NY Red Bull stopped in the metropolitan area of NY, but in New Jersey; the team then who will be able to field David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, with a legend like Patrick Vieira on the bench. Last but not least: the uniforms. A few weeks ago was presented the new secondary, with a really bold pattern, made of coils that give the impression of being propagated from the scudetto, placed on the chest, and that should symbolize the energy of the 5 yokers boroughs.
The answer of the Red Bull cousins was quick, and they dusted off the concept of the original New York Metro Stars, from which comes the first team of NY. All the supporter also greatly appreciated the new secondary Kansas City, even presented in the Super Bowl commercials interval. The Seattle Sounders have instead presented two new kits, one is the classic green but with a nice innovation in texture, and away in Ocean Blue.
The last in order of time to have revealed the new uniform were the Toronto FC, the team of the absolute dominator of last season: Sebastian Giovinco. And they did it by introducing a historical element, blue, and for the first time will be on their shirts and a large maple leaf to remember the origins and provenance of the franchise.
From this year, all the team will have a MLS crest with their own colors. Now we just have to sit back and wait for the final consecration of the wonderful game in the USA.
