Toronto Caput Mundi
NSS - New Sport Side
December 17th, 2015
At the time I am writing this, in Toronto there are 5 Celsius degrees. It's cold, but less than what I expected. Considering the time zone, probably soon it will get colder. Toronto is not the capital of Canada - Ottawa is - but it is definitely the most popular town, important means nothing after all. We can't deny, however, its central role in the media point of view in 2015 by the city, which will spread even in 2016.
Let's take this step-by-step, we're going to identify three areas of the Canadian supremacy, between digressions and provinces at less than 200 km away.
We, The North
Next year Canada will host for the first time an NBA All Star Game. The Raptors, the deductible of city since 1995, will be at the event in excellent conditions, with secure opportunities to bring some of their idols in the home game on Sunday. The event was announced about three years ago, under the auspices of Drake, that for some time took the team under his wing. From there the OVO Night, for which each year are drawn to the specific jersey, jackets, sneakers and all that the NBA can generate.
Two weeks ago instead, the uniforms for that magical night have been revealed. The East Coast will dress up in blue as usual, the West instead in red. As each time, the jersey will be deliberately inspired by the host city, in this case a leaf candle on his back, one on the shorts, the skyline of Toronto (one of the most recognizable in the world) on the back. The shorts will then be "seasoned" with the logo of Toronto, Toronto's new logo - which we already mentioned. For the first time this year the Raptors will not have the famous dinosaur to represent them in the primary logo, which died a few years ago. It is a sad story, but fortunately it remains the mascot, that a few days ago has become the protagonist again.
Hotline Canada
On November 26th there has been another Drake Night. Basically, the Air Canada Center dressed in their Sunday best, strictly in black and gold, to celebrate its favourite son, and during the evening Drake served as speakers, invited and host. The above mascot was the architect of a fun rework of Hotline Bling, the most played song of 2015 on Spotify, which made Drake the most listened artist on Spotify and, consequently, the protagonist of this musical year.
This wasn't his only success, seasoned also from an album (or mixtape) became a sort of instant cult: "If you are reading this is too late" and a mixtape with Future. Everything Drake touches turns to gold, or a meme.
Atomic Canada
That's not all, though. When we write that everyone has heard of Toronto this year, we mean really everybody. You don't like basketball? Do not appreciate the music of Drake? You can try again with the football. If there's a protagonist in the last MLS (the North American professional league football) this is Sebastian Giovinco. Former Juventus atomic ant in fact has become in a very short time the face of the league, to the sound of a performance level that had never seen on American courses. Even the media now do nothing but talk about Giovinco and consequently of Toronto. All the attention received from Giovinco can only be good for the image of the young MLS, although on him it seems to have set his sights on the Barcelona. That will try to scratch, so maybe indirectly, the dominance of a city that has never been so perfect.
