Noel Gallagher designed the Manchester City font

Britpop and football finally come together

Noel Gallagher designed the Manchester City font Britpop and football finally come together

Noel Gallagher, a well-known Manchester City fan who is always present in the stands at the Etihad, has designed the new font that will appear on the Citizens' jerseys for the 2024/2025 Premier League season, as well as during the Carabao Cup and F.A. Cup matches. The artist has hand-drawn the names and numbers of the Manchester City players, creating a cartoonish font. Noel Gallagher's creative choice confirms a trend launched this season by Real Madrid in collaboration with Y-3. Yohji Yamamoto has indeed created fonts and names for the players that appear to be made with brushstrokes, a tribute to Japanese art. As a result, starting next season, we may see various clubs in top European leagues adopting a different, yet also very divisive, type of font – just take a look at the comments under one of Manchester City's latest Instagram posts. The Citizens will not use the font in the Premier League but most likely in the Champions League and other seasonal outings; Manchester City is in fact one of the clubs that uses a different font on European nights, as do AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

The new font designed by Noel Gallagher is thus the latest initiative introduced by Manchester City for the next season. In addition to that, another element will appear on Manchester City's Home jersey starting from the first matchday of the 2024/2025 Premier League, scheduled for August 16. It is a graphic depicting the number 0161, the area code of Manchester. The most distinctive feature is found on the collar and sleeves, both edged in a darker blue on which the area code used in the neighborhood where the Etihad Stadium is located can be read in white. In line with the international successes achieved on the field, the Manchester team is constantly interested in reworking its visual identity, keeping the club's profile high both on and off the field.
