Nature, as we had seen also in the case of the Home jersey, is the preferred theme of the Pacific FC, the club of the Canadian Premier League that plays on Vancouver Island. And water itself is the protagonist of the concept chosen for the team's second kit, a highly anticipated jersey after the successes of previous seasons with the previous editions. The FC Secondary Kit, also known as the Resilience Kit, was once again created by local artist Maynard Johnny Jr and is inspired by salmon. The freshwater fish that must swim against currents to return home and lay their eggs, avoiding obstacles, predators, and fishermen along its difficult journey. According to the club and Macron, kit supplier for the entire Canadian Premier League, the salmon embodies the spirit of resilience, the ability to overcome adversity in life.
"The salmon reminds me of the Indigenous peoples who have survived oppression in Canada", said artist Johnny. "This jersey will create awareness and raise questions among Canadians about how we can make positive change in the future and inspire our youth". Maynard Johnny Jr.'s real name is Thii Haqwtun, and he is a descendant of the Coast Salish on his father's side and the Kwakwaka'wakw on his mother's side, two of the local Indigenous peoples. For each jersey sold, the Pacific FC and Johnny will donate $20 to Indigenous organizations Hope and Health and Indian Residential School Survivor Society. According to Paul Beirne, CEO of the Pacific FC, "the jersey represents our commitment to using our platform to work towards a better future for Indigenous youth in our community".
