An alternative to the classic Christmas jumpers of football clubs
December 21st, 2023
At Christmas, football clubs do not miss the opportunity to launch collections perfect for Christmas lunch and long days with relatives between bingo and presents. If you try to browse through the clubs' online stores, it will be very easy to find all kinds of products, especially the jumpers that echo the traditional ones worn during the holidays, with geometric motifs, reindeer, snowflakes and greetings cards. If you haven't given up the Christmas jumper of the team you have supported for years and have meanwhile expanded your collection to include jumpers from the Premier League, LaLiga and Bundesliga teams, several interesting alternatives won't make you look bad and are perfect for the Christmas aesthetic.
It is no coincidence that some brands and clubs have chosen the Christmas season to present these jumpers. After all, Christmas is a holiday with a well-codified aesthetic, the time of year when it is less embarrassing to wear ugly jumpers without being ashamed of it. Football and jerseys offer plenty of possibilities in terms of creativity, but in other sports too, jumpers seem to be the favourite items for the season. Recently, Brain Dead presented a collection in collaboration with the NBA, in which jumpers reminiscent of Christmas jumpers are featured, with revamped mascots of franchises such as the Bulls, Raptors or Heat. Knitwear is very Christmassy and teams have not only launched collections for fans, but also official clothing for the teams. In fact, the Bulgarian brand Miasin has designed a line of jumpers for the formalwear outfit of Grenoble, a French team currently third in Ligue 2. The jumpers are inspired by the club's uniforms and colours, with a very Christmassy aesthetic and embroidery that could be just right for you if you want to surprise friends and family during the holidays with a rare item.
Also Studio Miasin a few weeks ago had released a collection of jumpers featuring some iconic jerseys from football history. On the same wavelength are the jumpers by Pellador, an Irish brand with a great passion for vintage football that it reposes in its collections, some of which are excellent alternatives to Christmas jumpers.
Online the selection of Christmas jumpers is endless, from models of the past to more recent ones, and with a little research even the most unexpected collections can fit into the Christmas style, such as the cardigan made by Torino recently or the collaboration between LC23 and Iuter, with a polo shirt inspired by the world of football. So there is no shortage of alternatives, your jumper could distract you from the awkward questions of Christmas Eve dinner, or giving one to the cousin you haven't seen in months could save you from the real possibility of turning up empty-handed.
And the traditional Christmas jumpers?
As mentioned, the clubs have not given up producing Christmas jumpers this season. In Serie A, one can find AC Milan's Rossoneri models, Inter's with biscuits, and even a white model with black embroidery worn by Juventus players. Eagles and reindeer appear on Lazio's jumper, while among the strangest is perhaps Fiorentina's diamond patterned one, obviously purple with red and white details. If you were a fan of Bologna at the start of the championship, the Emilian team also made their own Christmas jumper. Among the big names of Europe, there are also the Christmas collections of Barcelona, Real Madrid, the very nice ones of Manchester United and City, inspired by the historical Umbro shirt with the Brother sponsor. Christmas collections could not be missing in the Bayern Munich store either, while PSG made a jumper with the name Noëlinho and the number 75 on the back.
