The best pixel-style shirts
More and more clubs are opting for this techno-vintage pattern
July 13th, 2023
The eagerly awaited release of Inter Milan's 2023/24 home kit has highlighted what seems to be a growing trend among European football clubs: pixels. Thank you in part to innovative printing techniques, it is now possible to create more complex and less geometric designs that are instead scrambled and randomised in the style of a digital screen. A style that combines a certain nostalgia for the 1990s aesthetics of video games and VHS with the urge to modernise and innovate the classic canon.

"Endless Shades of Milan" is the name of the advertising campaign for the jersey, highlighting the infinite colour possibilities of this creative interpretation of the classic Nerazzurri stripes. In this case, they are superimposed and disordered in a random rhythm, like in a video game.
AC Milan x Koché 2022/23
Back in February, PUMA released a special AC Milan jersey in collaboration with French brand KOCHÉ, instantly conquering fans from all over the world. Red and black as per usual, but with a graphic pattern at the bottom that then mutates into increasingly small pixels which eventually lose themselves in the black base. An instant classic.
Liverpool away 2023/24
After the disappointing 2022-2023 campaign, Liverpool is looking to start fresh, paradoxically doing so by adding a vintage touch to a ‘90s design. Inspired by the 1995-1996 away kit made by adidas, this year’s Nike version has a very similar layout, with the main differences being in the shade of green, and, most importantly, the boxy, pixelated pattern on the green sections. Hopefully, this design will help the Reds manage a top 4 finish, just as they did in the 1995-1996 season.
Burnley home 2022/23
Proving that smaller clubs can be fashionable and creative too, Burnley proudly donned the pixel-like pattern on their Umbro home kit throughout last season. Led by their charismatic manager and Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany, the Clarets only lost 3 league games, surpassing the 100-point mark and more than comfortably earning promotion back to the Premier League. A season unlike no other, marked by monumental optimism and joy, and represented by what could soon become an iconic kit for Burnley fans.
West Bromwich Albion away 2023/24
Another fellow Championship side adhering to this trend with PUMA. The very exotic lime color base - quite atypical for a club based in the West Midlands - is garnished with vertical lines of navy blue pixels that create an interesting ‘raining effect’, guaranteeing West Brom players to stand out during road games next season, as they fight for Premier League promotion.
