Wales wants to change its name
"The team should always be called Cymru, that's what we call it here"
November 2nd, 2022
In a few weeks the first World Cup in winter will officially start and there is another big news concerning one of the selections that will take part in the most awaited competition. According to reports in numerous national and international newspapers, Wales are planning to change their name after the World Cup in Qatar. A request that tells of the great identity impulse moving the UK's westernmost state as the Welsh want to adopt their Gaelic name Cymru, widely used within the nation, as well as the name of the region of Cumbria in north-west England.
"Our view at the moment is that nationally we are Cymru. If you look at our website, how we talk about ourselves, we are Cymru. At the international level we feel we still have some work to do. So we are going to this World Cup as Wales," the CEO Wales added.
Nothing is certain yet, but after the World Cup the federation will get to work to sort out all the bureaucratic issues and get FIFA to accept the name change. As you can see, Cymru, the new name, is already widely used across the national team's social channels. The CEO of Wales, Mooney, finally specified that: "2023 will be a year in which we will have a discussion with all the different stakeholders, whether it be governments, decision-making bodies, staff, clubs and players. We are a very open democratic organisation and we don't unilaterally decide to do something like that."
