The new EURO 2020 font
The "Bridge Type" that connects all the venues of the continental tournament
June 9th, 2021
The rebranding of UEFA passes through an essential stage such as the European championship which is just over 48 hours from the start whistle. One of the components of the visual identity of a competition is certainly the font, unveiled in the last few hours by the top management of UEFA. The "Bridge Type" chosen for the tournament has a very specific meaning: to unite all the venues of the first traveling version of the European Championship. Inspired by the concept of bridges, the font belongs to the sans serif group with a design that recalls what in the jargon is defined as the "fluid stencil" or the impression of being able to connect the visual elements of an object.
The desire to represent the connections between host countries, cities and players was the central idea of Young&Rubicam Portugal - who took care of the concept - and of Adotbelow - who took care of the creation of the font. The font seems to align with the one chosen by UEFA for the competition logo, but there are small differences that make it similar but not identical. For large texts the "Bridge Type" was used while for smaller texts the font is "PF Beau Sans Pro".
