Evergrande Guangzhou will have the largest stadium in the world
The team coached by Fabio Cannavaro will play in the ''Flower City'' stadium from 2022
April 29th, 2020
Last week, the largest Chinese real estate company, Evergrande, owner of the Guangzhou-based soccer team of the same name - and coached by Fabio Cannavaro - participating in the Chinese Super League, kicked off work on the construction of a stadium in lotus shape, which will be called in fact "Flower City".
We're talking about a $ 1.7 billion work that will become the largest football stadium in the world - with 100,000 seats, 16 private VIP suites, 152 VIP suites and an area dedicated to FIFA - which would replace the current 58,500-seat Tianhe stadium, which hosted an average of 46,000 fans per game in the 2019 season.
''The stadium will become a new world-class landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and Dubai's Burj Khalifa, and an important symbol of Chinese football for the world'' said Xia Haijun, president of Evergrande.
The works should end in 2022, in time for the Asian Cup to be played, which is scheduled for 2023, a sign that the Chinese league has an optimistic vision regarding the resumption of sporting events and more generally for the resumption of social gatherings.
The current Chinese Super League season was slated to begin on February 22, but due to the pandemic the league - and FIFA - imposed a break without a set shooting date.
