The Bulgarian Football Union introduces a scarf to fight racism
One month after the racist episodes that happened during Bulgaria-England, here's 'The Scarf of Respect'
November 19th, 2019
On October 14th the Bulgarian National football team match against England became viral for the racist and homophobic abuses that the local attendance of the Sofia's Stadion Vasil Levski hurled by the English footballers leading not only to the suspension of the Euro 2020 qualifying match but also caused also an inevitable disqualification from UEFA (Bulgaria will play the next two games without fans) and the resignation of the Football Association president, Borislav Mihaylov. A month later, the Bulgarian Football Union, in collaboration with Next-DC, have released 'The Scarf of Respect': made with the colors of the national flag and inspired by the love for football, with the aim of spreading the universal message that is a sport for everyone, independently by race, sex or religion.
A symbolic but necessary gesture, which involved some players of the major National team such as captain Ivelin Popov, Bozhidar Kraev, Kiril Despodov, Todor Nedelev and Simeon Slavchev, but also the Brazilian-born Marcelinho and the female goalkeeper of the Under-19 selection, Victoriya Dimova.
All proceeds related to the sale of the scarf will be donated to an organization that faces and fights discrimination in the world of football.
