10 players that you didn't remember have worn AS Roma's jersey
Forgotten and forgettable: ten Giallorossi meteors you probably do not have memory
November 9th, 2018
How many footballers does a normal fan see wearing the jersey of his favorite team over the years? If this is a top club, often the players can be talents or even real champions, but then maybe it happens that you fall in love with a complete stranger, that your team bought and sold only after a few of unlucky caps, quickly disappearing from the radar. The examples are countless, in every club: there are footballers who mark the history and some who go unnoticed, without you doing anything. The memory factor, however, is uncontrollable and doesn't follow an objective reason, even if it's normal that those who have worn the jersey of your favorite team deserve a more lasting memory. But it's not always like that. Today we will talk about ten players that you didn't remember they dressed AS Roma's jersey, once worn by champions like Totti and Batistuta, but also to "differently memorable" subjects as the following ten.
Francesco Tavano
We can only start from the legendary Ciccio Tavano. The 1979 born striker, after the failure of Fiorentina and the final move to Empoli, was inexplicably bought by Valencia CF in the 2006/07 season. Short and unfortunate his stay in Spain, since the player born in Caserta soon returned to Italy in January 2007, borrowed by Roma, which, of course, didn't really know which forward need. Ciccio played only 14 games with the Giallorossi, scoring two goals, debuting against Livorno, the team where in the summer of the same year he found his right dimension. Now at Carrarese, questioned on his Romanist past he says that Roma did well not to buy him because of the money (10 millions) requested by Valencia.
Gabriel Heinze
We still struggle to believe it, but the first American Roma in the summer of 2011 spent millions and millions to flesh out a team with lots of young talents and some old glory. Among these, in addition to the 'the Imperator' Adriano we remember (not so well) Gabriel Heinze, former defender of Real Madrid taken by the Giallorossi with the hope that he did like wine, improve getting old. Unfortunately for them it wasn't so, and today only few faithful remember of Heinze at Lupa, despite the thirty appearances in the 2011/2012 season.
Massimo Marazzina
"Who?", the younger ones might wonder. Massimo Marazzina is, as they say in these cases, "one of many". Forward with good touch, he was one of the main protagonists of the Chievo miracle between 1996 and 2000 and then between 2001 and 2003. Just at the beginning of this year, after having attracted the attention of the national team manger Giovanni Trapattoni goal after goal, the striker of Lodi landed in Rome on loan. And this is where the nightmare for the '74 born begins. Only seven appearances without goals with the Giallorossi jersey, before the temporary return to Verona, without being able to take advantage of an important chance. What a pity.
Fabio Simplicio
The appearances of Fabio Simplicio with the Giallorossi jersey were 43, with 8 goals scored in two seasons. It wasn't the most used in AS Roma lineup, although he has been able to give its modest contribution in the most disappointing seasons of 'la Magica'. However, it almost seems that the fans have forgotten about him: maybe he didn't have such a strong personality to be remembered by the fans, even if the most romantic ones will remember when he ran to the stands to kiss his wife and his son, before the Florenzi's similar scene. While we are all wondering what happened to the former Parma and Palermo midfielder, we move on to the next one we have forgotten.
José Angel
Let's start with a premise: that of the improbable left-backs is a long telenovela, or perhaps a dramatic series, which also includes Ashley Cole, Emanuelson, Holebas and Michel Bastos. The Iberian full-back arrived in Rome in the summer of 2011 after winning the Under 21 European Championship as a reserve. With Giallorossi he collected twenty-eight appearances without goals, returning to Spain the following year on loan to Real Sociedad with a half flop label. José Angel, who now plays for Eibar, hasn't stolen anyone's heart. At the moment, considering that at the European Championship he was the substitute of another memorable player such as Didac Vilà, I am not amazed at all.
Ludovic Giuly
Ludovic Giuly signed with Roma in the summer of 2007 after three good seasons at Barcelona and a Champions League final with AS Monaco. With the Giallorossi is at his ease, Spalletti employs him with sufficient regularity and the Frenchman doesn't disappoint. Too bad the idyll lasted only one year. In the summer of 2008, Giuly signed with Paris Saint-Germain, saying goodbye to Italian football in which he was so convinced, but failing to remain impressed in the minds of the fans. Maybe another couple of seasons would have helped to leave the mark more, but the fact is that, ten years later, Giuly to Roma is remember by very few. Maybe.
Maarten Stekelenburg
The Dutch goalkeeper has defended for two seasons Roma's goal with mixed results, and I think this what have obstructed him to enter the memory of the Giallorossi fans. It's certainly not the most forgotten, nor the most forgettable, but it must be said however that it's certainly not the first player to think about if you think at the 2011/2013 players, although he was one of the best goalkeeper of the period. Maybe he could do something more, even if it's right to mention his numerous injuries. If I think that sometimes Lobont and especially Goicoechea blew his place between the posts...
Michel Bastos
Stop and go. This is how Michel Bastos's experience in the capital can be summed up. Signed in January 2014, debuting in a boring 0-0 between Lazio and AS Roma and scoring his first and only goal against Sassuolo. Then he return to Saudi Arabia. What we remember about him? Maybe only the raisings to fantasy football to buy him in the repair transfer market. Sixteen appearances in the Giallorossi squad and then the goodbye for the former Lille and Lyon player, who hasn't played since then for any great team, dividing between Sao Paulo, Palmeiras and Recife in Brazil. Hands up who remembered him in Italy.
Luca Toni
The first stage of Luca Toni's return to Italy is Rome. The experience with Bayern Munich ended badly, so the 2006 World Champion striker was lent to the Giallorossi in January 2010, remaining in Rome until the end of the season and collecting 15 appearances and 5 goals. Not a very thin prize but not even the most you can expect from a bomber like him, not so much used by Claudio Ranieri. That's why his half-season with AS Roma is remembered by few. On the other hand, the class '77 forward will find hunger only at the end of his career, in a peaceful environment like that of the Hellas Verona, where he certainly knew how to leave a much more positive memory than elsewhere.
Nico Lopez
While we are talking about it, AS Roma is still waiting for its explosion. Nico Lopez's Giallorossi adventure, despite the initial vicissitudes with the Uruguayan federation, began wonderfully: his debut with goal at the first gameweek of the season bodes well, and all the fans rub their hands, certain they have found a star. Too bad that the one against Catania has remained the only Capitoline gol for the South American striker with those rabbit teeth, which only played six games in the whole season, despite having very impressed in the Primavera (15 goals in 12 games often starting from the bench, his score). Now at least he has found a permanent position: yes, next to Marazzina in the Romanist team of the forgotten.
