The Sauber F1 team has announced a new commercial and technical partnership with Alfa Romeo that will see the outfit rebranded for next season. This means that the Italian iconic brand is going back to the track after 32 years of absence. The team will be renamed Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team and it will feature the Biscione logo on the car, while the engine will be provided by Ferrari.
Sergio Marchionne - CEO of the FIAT group and president of Ferrari - always pushed to the comeback of Alfa Romeo in the circus and he commented the news:
This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years. A storied marque that has helped make the history of this sport, Alfa Romeo will join other major automakers that participate in Formula 1. The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 team's undisputed experience.
Alfa Romeo has a great history in Formula 1: the team won the title twice, one in 1950 with Nino Farina and the other in the following season with Manuel Fangio. For the upcoming season The team is expected to run Ferrari junior driver and F2 champion Charles Leclerc next year, with Antonio Giovinazzi - also a Ferrari junior - in the running to get the second seat if the team dispenses with Marcus Ericsson.
