5 items to give your mother to make her look less like a boomer
Or at least try
May 7th, 2022
8 May is International Mother's Day. Now, for those lucky enough to be able to say they have one, the problem of choosing a gift on this very special day is a drama that comes up every year with the same complexities. For those who, once again this year, have saved their strength for last and don't want to come up with the usual banal bouquet of roses, here is a guide that will help you not only to find a welcome gift but also to realise the wish that every child has kept secret since adolescence: to make their mother a little less boomer than she is.
First step: the phone case
The first scene we all imagine when we think of a 'boomer mum' is a woman in her fifties squinting behind her glasses for hypermetropia, strictly with a chain, in front of a mobile phone covered by a leather wallet case. Here's an interesting and inexpensive solution to help your mother get rid of that obscene book case that makes her mobile phone look inevitably huge: buying her a discreet, simple or fun and personalised cover for that Iphone 13 she hasn't yet learned to use.
Sneaker that do not scream «I’m old»
Comfort is the first thing, we all agree on that. However, if comfort is achieved through trainers in inappropriate colours or, worse still, covered in logos, lettering or sequins, then there is a problem. For Mother's Day, a welcome gift might be a pair of sneakers, perhaps flat and practical like Acne Studios' strap-locked model, or a pair of trendy New Balance, perhaps the most boomer brand around and yet certainly more aesthetically acceptable than any Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana or hyper-logoed Versace model.
Not your usual mom jeans
If there's one style our parents can't seem to get enough of, it's skinny jeans: no matter how many circulation problems your mum complains about, she's bound to have a pair of skinny denim trousers in her wardrobe that she squeezes into daily like a sausage. The solution? A pair of straight jeans, not baggy, not mum, not palazzo or flare, but stright, so as to combine practicality with good blood flow. A faithful pair of Levi's or a vintage pair of Lee will do just fine.
Not a big bag - but a great bag
Mums always have a lot of stuff in their bags and that's why they usually favour roomy models. When we were kids, it was amazing to see how, by digging at the bottom of a bag, our mothers were able to find anything we needed, an everyday magic a la Mary Poppins. So replacing what is, after all, a real little suitcase with a cool shopping bag to wear every day may not be enough to reward our mother for all she has done for us over the years, but it might be a good start. There's something for everyone: from Margiela's Japanise to the black leather Ganni Tote, via the classics Saint Laurent and Gucci.
Glasses that aren't cringey
An essential for every boomer mum is a pair of glasses hanging from a chain around her neck or constantly scattered around the house. Think of your mother with a pair of Chrome Hearts glasses or a vintage Chanel model, expensive but iconic and not at all boomer options.
