Cities in August look different, for a whole month they show a side that is hidden during the rest of the year. nss magazine explores the transformation of three Italian cities: Rome, Milan and Naples. This second episode is dedicated to Naples.
From Posillipo to the Spanish quarters, in the daytime in August, walking around Naples is almost impossible. The city is alive only at night. Meanwhile, the sea turns from being a romantic frame to a solution to escape the heat. Bathing is an intimate and deep way of experiencing the city, a privilege that only Neapolitans can benefit from. Immersed in the sea, the perspective on the city is overturned: the lights of via Posillipo, the alleys and Vomero become the focus of the town. Ilaria D'Atri has explored some historical sites of the city linked to the sea and the nightlife showing Naples in August: from Lido Pola on Coroglio beach to the baths Elena, an establishment inaugurated in 1840 where kids spend their days playing football in the shadow of Donn'Anna Palace.
Ilaria D'Atri is a photographer and visual artist based in Naples. She now lives and works in Naples where she leads the art direction of STUDIO PAURA. She has been collaborating with nss magazine for a long time.
