Love's Anatomy
Love at Netflix age
January 13th, 2017
Love, the new TV series created by Judd Apatow, a famous for show like Girls and for contributing to revolutionize the today's concept of comedy, is irresistible. The show broadcast from Netflix is a small perfectly imperfect jewel, like its protagonists Mickey, played by Gillian Jacobs, and Gus (Paul Rust). The two, both in their thirties and both just come out of a relationship, live in Los Angeles, two lost souls who meet by chance and a little at a time fall in love. Gus is a nerd, ugly and kind, who works as a tutor for a child actress and spends his evenings with friends invented soundtracks for movies that don't have it. Mickey works as a producer at a radio station, has a problem with drugs and alcohol and is beautiful, but without being fully aware. Love, nomen omen, it is a love story, an awkward, crooked, a little hipster and indie, made of brilliant dialogue, cynicism tips, references and dresses cool and unexpected tenderness. All you have to do it's to be won over by the love in Netflix's times.
Feel like: Tristan Pigott
Tristan Pigott makes oil paintings for the Instagram generation. The London artist tells his generation, narcissistic, clumsy, messy, often drunk, sometimes grotesque, yet fascinating, potentially beautiful. Capable of getting lost in a reflection. Or to find themselves in an unexpected person. As happens to Gus and Mickey.
Dress like: Coach 1941
The costume designer Jennifer Eve has search in a large number of shops and flea markets to find the pieces that make up Mickey's look. And the result rocks! Her mix of street wear, grunge shadows and sportswear makes her unique, cool, modern, and reminds very much the latest collections presented by the brand Coach 1941. On her, thanks to the beautiful bone structure of the face and a fascinating character, it all works: high waisted vintage Levi's, flannel shirts, Adidas jackets, Carhartt overalls, pussy blouses, mini dresses full of sequins, oversized sweaters, shorts with lace, miniskirts, band tees and even pool slippers with tulle socks. The star of Love is a true fashion icon, an it girl to copy, outlandish, ironic, messy... a perfect contemporary girl.
Think like: Eleonor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
"Eleanor & Park" is the story of a boy and a girl. Both are sixteen years old, but they are different. He is of Asian descent, loves punk-rock music, comic books, always dresses in black, is shy and of few words. She is weird, unfeminine, not slender and with a rebellious mass of curls and red hair. They meet on the school bus. They ignore each other. They observe each other. They fall in love. It's a messy love, full of pop references, ironic and romantic. Mickey and Gus if they were two teenagers less world-wise and cool.
Sound like: Wilco "I'll fight"
"I'll Fight". I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go for you. I'll fight, I'll fight, I'll fight, I'll fight for you. I'll kill, I'll kill, I'll kill, I'll kill for you.I'll die, I'll die, I'll die, I'll die for youi will, I will, I will". Jeff Tweedy of Wilco sings. Gus and Mickey kiss outside a supermarket, between shopping bags placed on the ground and petrol stations. She just confessed to having an addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, love and "need to just be by myself for maybe, like, a year and try and figure this shit out", Gus doesn't matter. He knows how to fill her void. And no one says that it will be easy. Theirs is an iffy love story and that's okay. There is music between the two. And there is in the soundtrack: Earth, Wind & Fire, Jamie XX, Eternal Summers, Breeders, Eddie Vedder, Violent Femmes, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, original compositions by Lyle Workman...Even the t-shirts sound with prints of The Beach Boys, Circle Jerks or Foo Fighters, but also musicians in the flesh as Mark "E" Everett of Eels and frontwoman Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux that make small cameos in Love.
Taste like: Two hash browns
Love like: Gillian Jacobs aka Mickey
There are few words to say. Love tells the oldest story in the world: a man and a woman falling in love. Yet the mix of intelligent dialogues, disillusionment, hipster mood, tenderness, irony makes it special. All it embodied in Mickey.
