Casa Volta, a retreat nestled between the ocean and the jungle
The perfect retreat for surfers and nature lovers
March 6th, 2020
Located halfway between Mexico City and the southern border with Guatemala, a few meters from the Pacific Ocean and the coast of Puerto Escondido, stands Casa Volta with its three domes that seem almost suspended over the lush nature that surrounds them. A small path through the trees leads to three rectangular buildings covered with reed brick, arranged around a long and narrow pond.
The layout, of almost 1,300 square meters, is composed of six rectangular areas, arranged alternating between the open terraces and the three covered structures. A continuous interplay between full and empty, exterior and interior designed to fully enjoy the atmosphere and beauty of the Oaxaca region. The project by Jorge Ambrosi and Gabriela Etchegaray is inspired by a classical temple and includes three vaulted roofs, each grafted onto a reinforced concrete structure finished with clay pigments and characterized by 12 columns.
Inside the buildings there are the bedrooms and the bathroom, while the main living spaces are outdoors. The kitchen is hidden under an open vault; the tables and deck chairs are located on one large patio, perfect for siestas or relaxing after a day spent surfing the waves.
You can book a stay at Casa Volta on Airbnb for about 230 euros per night, depending on the season.
