5 masterpieces to watch on Halloween night A 90s cult, a beautiful witch and a new Netflix series

Halloween has come this year too. If, however, you do not want to dress up, put on your pajamas, prepare a bowl of popcorn with caramel and place yourself on your sofa to enjoy the night with a marathon of movies and TV series. The offer of the various streaming platforms is too wide and you do not know what to choose? Do not panic. nss suggests 5 of them, obviously in a dark style, to watch: two masterpieces; a 90s cult, a new horror project by Netflix and the story of a beautiful witch. All you have to do is crush play.

The Crow (1994)

Not just a film, but a real cult. The ingredients to become one, on the other hand, there are all: love, revenge, mystery, death. Already, death, because if there is a detail that everyone knows about this work released in 1994 is that Brandon Lee, the leading actor, son of the great Bruce Lee, was killed during the filming by a weapon, in the which, although loaded with blanks, a real bullet had been trapped. From then on, according to the legend, on the film, the cast and crew shoot down a series of curses, all useful for nurturing the legend. Ask yourself what would have remained today, almost 25 years later, of The Crow if Lee were still alive, it makes no sense, but to some of us, grown up by repeating phrases of the script as "It can’t rain all the time", like to think that it would not make a difference. The magic we need is already all in the 132 minutes of the film: in the story of a man who returns from the world of the dead to avenge his murder and his girlfriend; in the soundtrack of Nin Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots; in the acting of Brandon Lee. As for many works of the time, several producers have been trying for years, without luck, to make a reebot of The Crow. Watch the movie, do your opinion, but for those who love this dark tale, this is and should remain the film by Brandon Lee, as explained in a wonderful post on Facebook its director, Alex Proyas.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

A masterpiece of world cinema. Do you need to know anything else? The legendary story of Bram Stoker; the iconic costumes of Eiko Ishioka, a stellar cast, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which includes Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins and a Gary Oldman in a state of grace. In recent months, Ryder and Reeves have returned to acting together and, during an interview, they have insinuated the idea of being married in reality, since their marriage in the film seems to have been celebrated by a true Romanian priest. Gossip aside, Halloween is the perfect opportunity to see Bram Stoker's Dracula, also because Netflix has announced for 2019 the release of a TV series inspired by it, developed by the creators of Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

The Love Witch (2016)

Take: a lot of macabre humor, esotericism and psychedelic; the aesthetics of the 60s Technicolor, obtained thanks to the first 35mm film; the B-movie horror; the works of Quentin Tarantino; a pinch of eroticism and a pinch of fairy tale. Add: a beautiful witch who, in search of perfect love, leaves behind a trail of blood and death. The result is The Love Witch, it is not the most beautiful film in the history of cinematography, but it is a paradise for aesthetes, made of saturated colors, sixties little dresses matched with the elements of the set design.

Penny Dreadful (2014 - 2016)

The Penny Dreadful were short horror stories, periodic macabre publications accompanied by bloody illustrations that depopulated the proletariat of nineteenth-century England. Those same atmospheres and the freaks protagonists of the series come from the best horror novels, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Bram Stoker's Dracula or The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, (recognize them all is almost a game) live in a tv series become, deservedly, cult, above all thanks to its protagonist, Eva Green, beautiful and very talented that gives a soul to Miss Ives and captures that of the audience.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

It was not even out and already had 100% of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, for GQ is "the first great horror TV show ever" and for Stephen King is "the work of genius". The Haunting of Hill House, streaming on Netflix since October 12, is the story, based on the novel by Shirley Jackson and told with continuous flashbacks, of the five Crane brothers, all struggling with repressed traumas and problems of various nature, due childhood spent in the mysterious home of Hill House. Delicate, complex, empathetic, distressing, this series is a little gem.
