Interview with Mayavanya
Two sisters musically perfect
October 31st, 2013
1. Two sisters musically perfect, who you really are?
We are two sisters who were born in Zagreb, Croatia and have lived in New Zealand for most of our life. It’s where we started getting involved with music production and DJing.
2. You found the music in New Zealand, who are the models that inspired you?
Even though New Zealand has amazing and talented musicians, our inspirations and role models always came from overseas. It was during the times we spent going to Electronic music festivals and raves in Europe that made us really want to get more involved and do what some of our favourite DJs do! Luciano, Loco Dice, Joey Youngman, Trentemoller, Dennis Ferrer, Lucca Bachetti, Steve Angello, Justin Martin, were some of the people that truly inspired us to learn how to DJ and take it to the clubs. But it started out as just a hobby and something we truly did for fun.
3. You have done so many musical works, with international artists and labels, how will your future?
We have just released a brand new single with a Canadian vocalist Mars, called ‘RUN’, which was released on WMG NZ. As well as an exclusive 1hour long live mix for the Red Bull Music Academy. We are working towards finishing our first album at the moment, so look out for more singles over the next few months from us with more guest vocalists and international collaborations! Our plan is to make the move to Europe next year and try and get more involved with the music scene here.
4. After the Global Dj, you've had several stops in Europe and other countries, when you arrive in Italy?
Maya was actually just in Italy last weekend, visiting our family in Venice, and being a little bit of a tourist there, drinking vino rosso and eating spaghetti aglio I olio spaghetti and pasta suta every day! but she didn’t have time to organise a show unfortunately. Next year when we are back in EU again however, we would really LOVE to come and play around Italy!
5. Artists such as MANDY, Sharam, Dennis Ferrer, Steve Lawler, Macy Gray, Joris Voorn and others have spoken well of you, in which direction it will move your music?
When we won that DJ competition we were still very new to the international electronic music scene, we never expected to win, it was all just a hobby and for fun for us! Since then we have spent a lot more time in the studio teaching ourselves how to produce and focus alot of our time more on making music. We hope to see them all again in the near future and share the stage with them again!
Thanks NSSMAG for getting us to talk to you! Hope we meet again and to see you next year!
