Franco 126 is opening its own Frigobar
The first solo for the Roman rapper
October 23rd, 2018
Only two years ago, Franco Bertolini began touring Italy with his lifelong friend, Carlo Coraggio, behind the artistic name of Carl Brave x Franco 126. With their record, Polaroid (released, at the time, for the independent label Bomba Dischi and now distributed under license by the major Universal Music Italy), they have given a decisive turn to the Italian music scene. They brought to light a whole series of stylistic choices that have influenced the new public that is taking shape in these years and, above all, that branch of record labels, journalists, managers, publishers and all of the people that we like to define "insiders". The steps moved together by Carlo and Franco were important for the Italian independent scene, together they showed that phenomena like I Cani and Calcutta were not isolated cases: in Italy anyone can achieve success with his own music, a dose of sacrifice and originality. Thanks to Carlo and Franco the musical genre defined by Spotify as "graffiti pop" came to life and the real Polaroids and the romantic dedications under the photographs are back in fashion. This way, the roman music scene was on the rise, once again: together, with other independent artists, they became spokesmen of a generation, raising details of the daily, such as Enjoy, cigarettes and 66 beers to real banners. But this is an old history.
Now, just a few months after his colleague's solo debut, Franco has impressed us with his first song. He put aside the autotune and all the "eh-eh" of the case to which (c’mon) we had become attached, to entrust his new romantic project only to his vocal timbre - low and harmonic - and to a piano. An incessant electronic drums keep the time inside the production - entrusted to Ceri, producer of Frah Quintale. This sound is vaguely reminiscent of the rap flavor of its recent artistic past (can we already define it like this?) but the classic atmospheres of this first song, they make us gave great expectations for the entire record. Solo record that, as told to Futura 1993 after one of his last concerts with Carl Brave at Home Festival, should come out for the end of this 2018, again for Bomba Dischi.
In short, after the winning featuring between Giorgio Poi and Frah Quintale and the ironic ballad "Chapeau" always between the rapper and Carl Brave, "Frigobar" seems to be the new piece of the puzzle that consolidates the collaboration between Undamento and Bomba Dischi. The players change but the game is still the same but, at this lap, we are really looking forward to something strong from Franchino. With this heartfelt and out of the box lyrics he has definitely raised expectations.
So, as when we were watching as a child from the keyhole without being able to have a total idea of what was happening in the room, Franco lets us look in his intimate through the door of a minibar: resignation, love, awareness, remorse and a long autumn to think and reborn. This hymn to solitude (on purpose, we think) is the perfect synthesis of a genre that is no longer a genre, the so-called indie that mixes with rap. We like the new wave of this songwriter who knows how to get to the heart of who is at the same time public and protagonist of his verses. A song that is a son of our time through which Franco 126 confides, telling us about himself how he had never done in previous works. Through this first solo work emerges a strong growth, the atmosphere evoked by the song is totally different from the one that accompanied Carl Brave x Franco 126. The rain that beats on the window replaces the ball games and the memory of a love ended badly clash with the cheer told together with the colleague. Now, Franchino looks at us (or does not, impossible to say by the black sunglasses that cover his face during all the video) and this time he’s alone, sitting aboard an Olympic pool: he smokes a cigarette while it’s evening and something tells us that soon he will decide to dive.
