Everything you need to know about the 27th edition of Paris Photo Between heritage and innovation, the art of photography at a crossroads

The 27th edition of Paris Photo is set to once again redefine the contours of the global photographic scene from November 7 to 10, 2024. Held under the stunningly restored vault of the Grand Palais, this event will bring together over 230 exhibitors from around the world, united by a shared passion. While Paris Photo has been an institution since 1996, this edition will mark a turning point for the event, both in its ambition and audacity. Each space and section of the fair will offer an open window into the plurality of photographic art, from its revolutionary beginnings in the 19th century to today’s most avant-garde works. The Elles x Paris Photo journey, now an unmissable classic, will return with the same fervor as in previous editions, celebrating women photographers and their indispensable contributions to this ever-evolving art form. Here, there is no room for half measures: renowned names stand alongside rising stars in a compelling and urgent dialogue about the image and its transformative power. Meanwhile, visitors will immerse themselves in carefully orchestrated spaces, from the Voices sector, which will echo the singular voices of contemporary art, to the Emergence sector, a true incubator for the young photographic scene.

The richness of this edition lies in its desire to confront visions, to provoke fruitful exchanges between generations, genres, and cultures, all within a decidedly cosmopolitan atmosphere. However, this year, it is the arrival of a guest of honor that promises to captivate minds: Jim Jarmusch, a cult figure of American independent cinema, who debuted with Permanent Vacation in 1980 and won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984 for Stranger Than Paradise. His melancholic and poetic gaze seems perfectly suited to be reflected in photography. The fair will also celebrate the centenary of Robert Frank, the renowned photographer who made history with The Americans (1957). Jarmusch, a friend and mentor of Frank, praised his boundless influence and his ability to reshape preconceived ideas and reinvent his own visual language, following Frank’s passing in 2019. This fusion of arts, which Jarmusch also embodies perfectly, will be celebrated with the screening of four restored films by Man Ray, for which Jarmusch composed the original music with his band SQÜRL. This unique project will premiere in Paris before a national release.

This edition is not just a nostalgic tribute: it is also forward-looking, exploring new paths and new voices. Every booth, every conference, every work on display will resonate with creative energy. This is an event where one does not merely observe but truly engages in a dialogue with the image. Beyond the galleries, it’s about encounters, shared stories, and a moment when art, in all its forms, begins to pulse. Paris Photo 2024 stands out for its ability to capture the spirit of its time while remaining grounded in a well-established tradition. Every edition is a lesson in humility and wonder at the infinite potential of the image. But with the rise of artificial intelligence and new technologies, a question arises: how will photography reinvent itself in the face of these upheavals? This edition invites reflection on the future of an art in full transformation, balancing heritage and innovation.
