The Moor — a visually captivating short film by Italian director Daphne Di Cinto that intricately explores the life of Alessandro de’ Medici who was the first Duke of Florence of African descent in Renaissance Europe — is currently under consideration for 2024 Academy Awards Awards in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Daphne Di Cinto's debut as a writer, director, and producer , ‘Il Moro' not only sheds light on an overlooked aspect of Italian history but also serves as an ode to self-love for Black-Italians, Afropeans, and the African diaspora. Its impact resonates widely, captivating audiences of varied backgrounds across Europe and the USA. The film's accolades from renowned festivals, including the Italian Black Movie Awards and the Oscar Qualifying Reel Sisters Film Festival, affirm its powerful storytelling and exceptional direction. Its recognition and acclaim position The Moor as a strong contender for the 2024 Academy Awards .Di Cinto became inspired to create the film after visiting the famous Cappelle Medicee in the Basilica di San Lorenzo in Florence, which is the resting place of the Medici family. The most famous members of the Medici family are buried inside a tomb designed by Michelangelo, where you’ll find Lorenzo the Magnificent, his brother Giuliano and Alessandro de’ Medici, who after being assassinated in January 1537, was thrown in the tomb of his official father, Lorenzo Duke of Urbino .
«If you visited the chapel before October 2023, unless you personally knew the story you wouldn’t have known that Alessandro de’ Medici rested there: while all other Medici men have their names written in front of their tombs, you wouldn’t have found Alessandro’s name mentioned anywhere. I didn’t understand why you could find information about everybody else, but not on Alessandro. He held a very important position at his time. Why was his memory still being erased?» commented Di Cinto. «My film tells the story of a real Black Italian Duke, but at the same time it tells the story of the Afro-Italian and Afro-European communities, of our continued presence within the history of our continent and of how that presence has been swept under the rug». In addition to her cinematic success, Daphne's efforts led to the restoration of Alexander's historical memory by urging the inclusion of his name in the Medici Chapel. This significant step recognizes Alexander's historical importance and marks a crucial moment in reclaiming his rightful place in history. With plans underway to expand The Moor into a television series, the film's impact continues to grow.
