Balenciaga has quit Twitter
The first major fashion brand to leave the platform in the Musk era
November 14th, 2022
Elon Musk, known for his marked sympathy for the American right, impulsive decision-making, and a fortune that makes him the richest man in the world according to Forbes, does not seem to inspire confidence in everyone. The dissent seems to be a silent but growing phenomenon. This is demonstrated by the departure of well-known figures such as Jameela Jamil and Shondra Rimes, who decided to leave the social network in protest at the time of the takeover, as well as Balenciaga's more recent decision, reported by BoF, to remove its Twitter account, becoming the first major fashion brand to leave the platform.
This is bad news for Balenciaga's fans since creative director Demna Gvasalia used to open debates on garments and collections, so much so that the account had reached 950,000 followers. The Kering brand is the first example of a fashion company choosing to abandon the platform, but it is not the first company to do so: in previous days, General Motors and Dyson had also chosen to follow the example of celebrities such as Gigi Hadid. It will certainly be interesting to see if Balenciaga's example will be followed by others brands-especially from the Kering group-or if it will remain an isolated case.
