The Naples of a thousand faces in Tales From Underground
A publishing project that tells the story of the Neapolitan city
June 15th, 2022
Tales from Underground is an editorial project centered on the multidimensional narrative of a complex city like Naples: suburbs, neighborhoods and subcultures open up in the most direct and realistic account of the Neapolitan city. Under the investigative lens of four photographers - the project was designed and implemented by Black Box in collaboration with Gaetano De Angelis, Maria Clara Macrì, Jake Hartwell and Mila Cuomo - an authentic reflection on the dynamics that mark the rhythms of a too-often mystified everyday life has taken shape.
Reflection that gave rise to a free-themed space-belonging, inclusiveness, internationality and multiculturalism were the main themes covered-in which the different sensibilities of the photographers merged into a sincere portrait of a densely heterogeneous urban reality. Gaetano De Angelis, street culture photographer and founder of the We belong to Naples project, was the author of Chapter 1: Stay True told the suburbs of Naples through the realization of a reportage with a bare and essential style. Femininity, introspection and intimacy, on the other hand, were the main pillars of the work of Maria Clara Macrì, an internationally acclaimed photographer and author of the book/project IN HER ROOM. She curated the second chapter of Tales from Underground, entitled Raw Beauty.
Instead, the third chapter, Without Borders, was entrusted to the filming of Jack Hartwell - co-founder of the British community The Basement, recognized as the most influential in Europe with collaborations with brands such as Nike and New Balance - who probed the terrain of a folkloric Naples in which it is virtually impossible to succeed in separating the plane of the ordinary from the extraordinary. The project was in fact named Without borders. And finally, the contribution of Mila Cuomo, an up-and-coming photographer who, with her latest chapter Common Ground, has favored outcast people and subjects, recounting the experience hidden behind the details and veils of a city that still has much to say.
