Who are the celebrities banned from the Met Gala
Between bad experiences and a few too many statements about Anna Wintour
April 29th, 2023
If the Met Gala is one of the most awaited and celebrated events in the celebrity culture, over the years a series of more or less famous celebrities have seen their names deleted from the list of people welcome at the court of Anna Wintour. If in some cases these are just rumors, in others they are real bans, "personae non gratae" that in no situation can tread the red carpet of the Met Gala. Among the certain names, but also among the most obvious, is that of Dondald Trump, the former president of the United States officially banned from the Costume Institute Gala. The confirmation came from Anna Wintour herself when, host of James Corden, she answered the question «Who would you never invite to the Met Gala» with the name of the former President.
Many of the names absent from the guest list owe their fame solely to a few too many statements, as in the case of Tim Gunn. In 2016, the former Project Runway judge revealed the episode that earned him a ban from the Met Gala: «I was asked what is the most unforgettable thing I've ever seen in fashion and I said, 'It's easy. I t was watching Anna Wintour being carried down five flights of stairs by two body guards—two big hulking men—from a fashion show.» «All hell broke loose» Gunn had added. «It was insane. We've had an open war ever since.» The same had happened to Rachel Zoe, who in 2007 was guilty of calling herself more influential than Anna Wintour, earning herself a five-year ban from the Met in one fell swoop, and more recently to Kanye West, who provoked anger and disappointment from the entire fashion system following his multiple racist and anti-Semitic statements just a few months ago, thus earning himself excommunication from Vogue. «Neither Vogue nor its editor-in-chief Anna Wintour intend to work with West again after his anti-Semitic invective and support for the White Lives Matter cause,» the company had clarified in a press release. Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart may also have lost her chance to attend the Met again, after harshly commenting on the dangerous diet Kim Kardashian followed in order to wear Marlyn Monroe's dress during the last edition. In an interview with W Magazine, she explained «I don't think I'll be invited back. I said something about a certain person in a certain dress.»
But if on the one hand there are the banned celebrities, on the other there are those who were disappointed, as in the case of Gwyneth Paltrow. In 2013, the Goop founder had unabashedly declared that the Met Gala «sucked», adding that «it's so hot and it's so crowded and everyone's pushing you». Similar fate for Zayn Malik, former One Direction that after being the +1 of Gigi Hadid in 2016 had declared to GQ «it's not something I would go to», while Demi Lovato had spoken of her experience at the Met as «terrible». In 2016 something similar was done by Amy Schumer, when during an interview with Howard Stern she had declared, «I don't like the farce… we're dressed up like a bunch of f--king assholes. I don't like it. I have no interest in fashion… I don't care.» From one comedian to another, even Tina Fey was not particularly impressed with the Met Gala, as she told David Letterman a few years ago, «I have gone to it once and it is such a jerk parade. Clearly, I'll never go again». So, if during the next Met you happen to notice the absence of some celebrities, now you'll know why.
