Everything you need to know about LV Cruise 2017
Fashion goes to Rio
May 30th, 2016
For Louis Vuitton Cruise 2017 show, Nicolas Ghesquière chose the wonderful chaos of Rio de Janeiro. Last Saturday May 28 at 4.30 pm local time, under a blue sky, on the notes of Sphynz by La Femme, the show begins.
Here’s all you need to know about this incredible event:
Where
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Niteroi, designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, was built in 1911, but only opened in 1996. It is a Modernist building perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, offering a beautiful view of the Guanabara bay on one side and on Rio de Janeiro on the other. Even if at first glance it seems like a spaceship, Niemeyer has actually conceived the building as a flower blossoming from its pot, faithful to his theory that "making architecture is creating beauty''.
“This location has inspired me immediately” - explained Nicolas Ghesquière. After the residence of Bob and Dolores Hope designed by John Lautner in Palm Springs, Louis Vuitton continues its charming architectural journey.
Who
Nicolas Ghesquière calls and the fashion system answers.
Many local and international guests, including about 514 journalists, celebrities and models arrive in Brazil for the latest show signed Louis Vuitton.
In the front row, all the faces of the House: Alicia Vikander, Jaden Smith, Zendaya, Alessandra Ambrosio, Isabeli Fontana, Catherine Deneuve, Doona Bae.
Mica Arganaraz opens the show in a long red, white and blue asymmetrical dress, while the show is closed by Natalie Westling. Between the two, 47 other models, including Lineisy Monteiro and Fernanda Ly, walk the curved crimson flight of stairs, transformed for the occasion into a breathtaking catwalk.
What
Rio, its energy, its multiculturalism and futuristic design become fashionable. The tropical modernism of the carioca city is transformed into colourful and dynamic dresses. The designer deconstructs diving suits and revises the work of artists Hélio Oiticica and Aldemir Martins, creating a sporty-chic collection, casual, modern, vibrant, aerodynamics, in constant motion.
The cult piece? The Boombox bag, formed by a mini puzzle of Vuitton trunks, reminiscent of a boombox.
Backstage
Not only fashion. Along with the invitations for the show Nicolas Ghesquière gives his guests labels to customise their luggage and a Rio travel guide. The Vuitton team also organised a mini-tour of the city with trips to the Corcovado mountain, visits to Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and paddleboard lessons.
The Cruise Collection is not just a show. It is a war machine that requires a careful planning, more than 300 people including models, hairstylists, makeup artists, tailors, PRs and about 5,000 hours of work.
After the catwalk, guests were led to the after show party at Parque Lage, at the feet of Christ the Redeemer, to have fun with champagne and samba.
