Supreme vs Morrissey
A controversial campaign
February 15th, 2016
What happens when an international rockstar is chosen as the face of a brand symbol of the skate scene? Nothing good, judging from what has emerged these days regarding the unlucky relationship between Morrissey – the Smiths ex leader – and Supreme.
Last October Moz has posed in front of Terry Richardson’s lens for the t-shirt campaign of the brand, which, in the past, has starred personalities such as Lou Reed, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga. Shortly after the release of the images, Morrissey expressed his huge regret: I apologise enormously for the enfeebled photograph of me issued this week by Supreme […] I considered the photograph to be fit only for a medical encyclopedia and I pleaded with Supreme not to use it. This was before I learned that Supreme were sponsored in part by the beef sandwich pharaoh known as White Castle. Supreme were issued with a legal caution not to use the photograph and their fee would be returned. Evidently Supreme have ignored my lawyer” he wrote on his website.
Besides not appreciating Richardson’s shots, the singer reports an ethical issue: in the past, Supreme has collaborated with hamburger chain White Castle, and Morrissey, being vegetarian, refused the association.
Supreme requested a reinbursement in order not to release the images – and possibly pay a new testimonial – but not having received it, they proceeded according to the initial agreement.
