The history of Issey Miyake’s fashion provocation goes to Tokyo
@ National Art Center
November 24th, 2015
Tokyo celebrates Issey Miyake. From March 16 to June 13, 2016 the National Art Center will show the 45 years of the creative path of the Japanese fashion designer from 1970 until today.
Issey Miyake Exhibition: The Work of Issey Miyake - this the name of the event - will offer its viewers the opportunity to revive the career of this genius of fashion and explore his work, ideas and creative approach thanks to interactive contents and exposure of clothing and design objects.
The talent of this man born in Hiroshima, a student at the graphic design department of Tama Art University, marked the world of fashion and art thanks to his great experimentation, pragmatism, and, above all, the conviction that the dress exists by virtue of the physicality of the wearer and his movement. Because clothing is not just a matter of fashion or trend, but a form of design closely linked to the life of each of us.
Miyake said: “From the beginning I thought about working with the body in movement, the space between the body and clothes. I wanted the clothes to move when people moved. The clothes are also for people to dance or laugh”.
The exhibition will be divided into three rooms. Space number one will be dedicated to the free-form, abstract apparel designed by Issey in the 70s; the second will be focused on the 80s and the exploration of the body with sculptural corsets, synthetic and futuristic fabrics. The third room will focus instead on the collaborations and special projects derived from the designer’s innovations and experiments like the Pleats Please, BAO BAO and A-POC.
A reason not to miss Issey Miyake Exhibition: The Work of Issey Miyake? For the first time, you'll be able to see the secret production process behind the pleats that have turned the brand into a worldwide icon.
