Kering opens the doors of luxury to young suburban designers
The Group strengthens its commitment to young people with 0-93 Lab
January 29th, 2025
While the quarterly results of its competitor LVMH have just been released and are not promising, the group Kering has made an exciting announcement: the group is partnering with the nonprofit organization 0-93. Lab to support young creators from underprivileged suburbs of Paris in accessing careers in fashion and design. The goal of this initiative, beyond the confines of the fashion capital, is to build a bridge between young people from the Paris metropolitan area — particularly from often disadvantaged suburbs — and the luxury sector, through a significant investment by the group. This mission aligns with the work that 0-93. Lab, named after the postal code of Seine-Saint-Denis, has been carrying out since 2019 to democratize access to fashion design and visual arts for young people.
Based in Aulnay-sous-Bois and its surroundings, the organization offers workshops and free cultural events open to all. It supports young people in their creative projects, whether personal or professional, by preparing them to join art and design schools. Founded by designer Bastien J. Laurent, cofounder of Atelier Avoc and winner of the ANDAM Creative Label Award in 2017, the association draws inspiration from its creator’s journey, as he himself grew up in the neighborhood. "With the support of major players like Kering, we can help new generations of talent in Greater Paris play a key role in the growth of France’s creative industries,” said Laurent. “Kering's sincere and respectful approach values our identity as well as the hybrid and experimental nature of our project.”
Indeed, with Kering's support, 0-93. Lab is preparing to open a new 3,250 square foot space in the Cité des 3000 in Aulnay-sous-Bois. This fully equipped facility will enable activities such as sewing, dyeing, screen printing, embroidery, photography, and filmmaking. Kering has already collaborated with 0-93. Lab by mentoring young people during an initial six-month program recently completed. In another joint project, young participants used Balenciaga fabrics to design costumes for the ballet "Apaches" at the Paris Opera. This collaboration will expand further this year with the launch of a workshop program where young people will work directly with Balenciaga's creative teams. "This partnership with 0-93. Lab embodies our genuine commitment to passing on expertise. By fostering the mentoring of young talent, we are encouraging the emergence of a new creative generation, thereby promoting unique craftsmanship within our industry,” said Béatrice Lazat, Chief People Officer of Kering.
