The new collaboration between Stone Island and Dior
An immersion in the world of Massimo Osti devoted to the most extreme luxury
May 13th, 2024
In an unprecedented marriage of two distinct worlds, Dior has today announced its new collaboration with Stone Island—a partnership that draws a correlation between Chrstian Dior and Massimo Osti, the two founders, both individuals dedicated to the pursuit of sartorial perfection, albeit from opposite ends of the fashion spectrum. Kim Jones, the mind behind this collaboration as well as its primary model, has described the capsule as the amalgamation of contrasting traditions but with a common thread in the passion for excellence in craftsmanship and garment construction, laying the groundwork for this revolutionary partnership. The romanticism, rigor, and history of Dior's atelier seamlessly intertwine with Stone Island's textile innovation, uniting two iconic brands for the first time—among other things, knowing Jones's connection with the English streetwear scene, Stone Island is a particularly significant brand given its long history with various generations of young Britons.
The collaboration explores a myriad of techniques and materials, blending military-inspired functionality with high fashion. Noble materials, particularly silk, serve as a common thread, bridging the gap between Stone Island's utility and Dior's luxury. A highlight of the collection is an aviator jacket in grainy nappa leather, where the wear of the leather is simulated thanks to specific resins and waxes that prevent perfect color adhesion to the skin, with a final artisanal step that makes each piece unique. Then there is the circular leather trunk, adorned with Stone Island's compass rose produced in collaboration with Maison Sennelier, the shop that supplied materials to Picasso and Cezanne. The alchemy of color takes center stage in the collection, transforming iconic shades and silhouettes from Stone Island's archive into intensified iterations. Symbols and motifs, ranging from discreet hints to direct references, unite the two brands, such as with the tailoring motif of the 'double pleat' from Dior's haute couture collection intertwining with Stone Island's characteristic 'dutch rope' system, creating a fusion of form and function. Footwear and accessories further exemplify the hybridization of styles, celebrating both functionality and traditional craftsmanship. From boots inspired by climbing shoes to sneakers made with Stone Island's craftsmanship, each piece embodies the essence of both brands.
