JW Anderson's new collection in collaboration with A.P.C. takes its cue from I Love America and America Loves Me, a 1974 performance by Joseph Beuys in which the German artist has himself transported by ambulance to and from the plane wrapped in a felt blanket, a way of isolating himself from the outside world, from America, consequently getting locked up in the René Block gallery for three days in the company of a coyote. A coarse wool montgomery and graphics bearing the address of the museum space paint a fine line between classic silhouettes and the work of Beuys, a capsule that represents designer Jonathan Anderson's perfect wardrobe. The collection is genderless but splits into two starkly contrasting aesthetics, one rock, tight and sensual with black denim and biker jacket, one hippie, with soft shapes and multi-coloured knitwear. For the French brand A.P.C., the collaboration represents a first, with the introduction of the first torn and laser-faded model produced without the use of chemical products.

«The idea of the project is to learn from the excitement of a new collaboration,» explains Jonathan Anderson. «It corresponds to my vision of fashion and seemed a natural fit. We are fascinated by reinventing things that don't need to be reinvented, as it would be more exciting to glorify them. The extraordinary thing about A.P.C. is that there is never too much. There is just that touch of contemporary.» The collaboration features revisited classic looks, from American jersey t-shirts to hand-knitted socks to an ultra-strong canvas tote bag with an XXL zip closure. «Our business meetings have always been a very dynamic and productive ping-pong match,» explains A.P.C. Creative Director Jean TouiTou about his projects with Anderson. «When I had an idea, Jonathan would immediately turn it into something better. It is a kind of hypertext without limits, an automatic writing applied to clothes, accessories and images. Thanks to Jonathan, we were able to go further, both in originality and research. Let's get in Joseph Beuys' ambulance and follow him on his chimerical journey.»
