Vestiaire Collective's new report reveals the current state of second-hand fashion
And the brands most loved by its users
June 27th, 2023
Vestiaire Collective's Impact Record analyses each year the most significant trends in the world of second-hand fashion, taking a practical look at consumer habits and their perception of sustainable shopping. Published this month, the company's new report shows that, between 2021 and 2022, ads on the platform increased by 33%, and vintage items reached over 55 million clicks. Let's take a look at what Vestiaire's report reveals the reasons why so many people are interested in vintage and the brands that have been the most popular over the past twelve months.
Fashion and Sustainability
According to the Impact Record, events in the world of pop culture and fashion, such as the Coperni SS23 show, have influenced this increase in consumer interest in second-hand fashion. On the catwalk, supermodel Bella Hadid wore a spray-on dress that went viral, and in the 24 hours following that moment, 'likes' of Coperni's designer items on Vestiaire spiked +345%. Similarly, the passing of Vivienne Westwood and Thierry Mugler attracted considerable growth in second-hand clothes designed by them, +613% and +1131% respectively. Another key aspect analyzed in this report was an environmental concern, which is motivating more and more people to browse second-hand offerings on Vestiaire's online platform. The Impact Record reports that 8 out of 10 app users say they prefer high-quality, vintage, and designer clothes over fast fashion, and more than half of Vestiaire's total users (52%) say they use the platform for shopping precisely because it has less ecological impact than buying new.
Favorite brands
Among the most purchased luxury brands on Vestiaire are Chanel and Gucci, followed by Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, and Hermès, while in the case of ready-to-wear brands, the platform's users mainly favor Moncler, Jacquemus, Alexander McQueen, Acne Studios, Isabel Marant and Vivienne Westwood. The most searched items are Gucci belts, which received a 15% increase in clicks compared to 2021, and Louis Vuitton's Speedy bags, which attracted 22% more attention this past year. Moncler coats, together with Cartier's Tank Must watches, were the most popular garments and accessories, with increases of 51% and 57%, respectively.
