More than just
a pair of jeans
Just a few months ago, the discovery of what had been dubbed "the oldest jeans ever" had shaken up the huge community of denim addicts scattered around the world. The news (which we recounted here) is the perfect thermometer of what today's passion for denim is, which has become - also abetted by the rediscovery of archival fashion - one of the cult garments of a very large group of enthusiasts. Whether it is the provenance or the wash, jeans tell a story linked above all to their durability; the ability not only to be a permanent presence in the closets of half the world for almost a century but above all that physically resist the passage of time. While for most garments the passage of time poses a threat to their appeal and wearability, jeans, on the other hand, manage to capture the best from every moment. Whether it's a rip or a paint machine, denim manages to turn it into a virtue. Just as good wine does, time improves it.
This is also why on the occasion of Milan Fashion Week, nss magazine is inaugurating the Jeanss Unit, a collaborative project created with sample_unit to sensitize its community to the concept of waste and reuse in the fashion world. From Feb. 21 to 26, a selection of reworked denim in five different washes will be available inside a pop-up store. The process, which uses discarded materials, aims to reevaluate the past without erasing its history and uniqueness. The setting for the event will instead be the Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea gallery.
