How to replicate the style of the most iconic rappers

The relationship between rappers and fashion is an issue rooted in the turmoil of the 1980s and 1990s. A direct descendant of the hip-hop movement - the redemption against racial or class discrimination and the conquest of urban space was its founding pillars - rap is the musical style that grew out of it. Fashion, which by its nature constantly feeds on the imaginaries of other worlds, has established a strong connection with the universe of music and rap. From the streetwear looks of Tupac to the more elegant styling of Diddy, it is possible to trace aesthetic elements that are repeated within a style that has its own specific characteristics. Analyzing the looks of five iconic rappers - LL Cool J, Tupac, Diddy, Missy Elliott, and Camron the artists involved - we chose a key item for each of them, selecting garments directly from the Zalando store.

 

The connection between LL Cool J and hats has virtually defined his artistic career and personal style. When he caused a sensation with the release of Radio in 1985, he soon after transformed the Kangol bucket hat into hip-hop essential.

 

Whether in denim or cotton, in classic blue or colored versions, dungarees are the most casual garment there is. An item beloved by Tupac Shakur, but one that is back in vogue today among young people like all workwear. 

In addition to being a tour de force in the music world, Diddy's style set the standard for hip-hop fashion in the 1990s and remained true to his signature New York street style. His looks have always played on the free associations between formal, stylish, street, and sportswear. That's why, inspired by one of his looks, we selected the Calvin Klein overshirt.

In 2003 Missy Elliott won a Grammy Award wearing a pink velvet Adidas jumpsuit, accessorized with a bandana, golf cap, and white sneakers. 

 

Cam'ron is an iconic figure in hip-hop, best known for forming The Diplomats in 1997 with his Harlem childhood friend Jim Jones. In addition to being a key player in establishing a new wave of rap music on the East Coast, Killa Cam is known for his unique fashion sense. Over the years, Cam'ron has been spotted in oversized outfits with bright prints and colors. His looks influenced streetwear fashion long before A$AP Rocky started calling himself "fashion killa“. Killa Cam's fan-favorite look is the legendary pink flip-phone fur coat, which has inspired generations of Halloween costumes.
