How to replicate your favorite villain's look
The perfect villain look according to Zalando
October 31st, 2022
The film world has always drawn on the aesthetic and cinematic imagery of Halloween, finding its own form of expression in the horror genre. The list of films that ended up giving rise to blood and characters that became iconic due to a carefully crafted villain's look and outfit is long. Whether we're talking about Freddy Krueger's nails or sweater, or the hair and looks that straddle the uninhibited and scruffy Tyler Durden from Fight Club, the styling and use of expertly matched costumes are undoubtedly central.
We asked the 80s 90s 00s account who revealed the key points for creating a perfectly functional villain look. «For me, the greatest villains are the ones that exert a very powerful form of magnetism on screen and stick with you long after the movie is over. Even if they are creepy, you always want to see something of them. Sometimes they have characteristics that are sympathetic in the eyes of the audience, and other times they are simply funny,» he told us. And much of the magnetism unleashed by villains, needless to say, comes through looks. «If the look is right, the character can become iconic. Just think of Freddy Krueger and his striped mansion and fedora combo; if it's wrong, however, the movie and the villain can slip much more easily from memory,» he told us. His selection, based on items chosen with Zalando, imagined recreating the looks of villains such as Tyler Durden (Fight Club), Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare On Elm Street), Catherine Tramell (Basic Instinct), Nancy Downs (The Craft), and Jack Torrance (The Shining).
Freddy Krueger
Oversized red-striped black sweater, regular black jeans, and the ever-present dark fedora. Arm yourself with a pair of dark boots and you're good to go. The look should be instantly recognizable, just like a nightmare from the set of Nightmare.
Tyler Durden
Cheeky, sexy, and provocative, the Fight Club protagonist's look is low maintenance - charisma aside. A burgundy blazer jacket and a 70s patterned shirt, like the Paul Smith, tailored one, are a must. For pants, you might opt for a pair of work pants like those from Dickies. To complete a pair of boots and colorful sunglasses.
Catherine Tramell
As sophisticated as it is authoritative, Catherine Tramell's actress look is the pure expression of the power dress: classic slingbacks paired with turtlenecks, pencil skirts, and a short coat. Greenlight is also given to accessories such as bracelets, albeit dosed. In this case, it's all about attitude.
Jack Torrance
If, on the other hand, the goal is to emulate the look of Jack Torrance from The Shining, you'll only need a flannel shirt, bomber jacket, straight-leg jeans, and suede shoes. A passion for literature and writing may not be a prerequisite; the rest is (almost) a must.
Nancy Downs
Nancy Downs' look comes from The Craft draws inspiration from preppy and veers toward a dark academic style. Yes to pleated skirts, blouses with cardigans, and high-heeled ankle boots. If you love schoolgirl looks and have a gothic streak, you're all set.
