Daily Paper and Off-White™ built the first skate park of Ghana
The Freedom Skatepark was unveiled in Accra in collaboration with Surf Ghana Collective
December 15th, 2021
Last year Daily Paper and Off-White™ announced the start of a project to create the first skate park in Accra, the capital of Ghana, in collaboration with the local collective Surf Ghana. Today, a year later, the Freedom Skatepark has been revealed to the public. The inauguration will be attended by both members of the local skate community and international guests who celebrated a new chapter in Ghana's sport and creative life. During the ceremony, open skate sessions and performances by local artists and DJs will be held, along with a tribute to Virgil Abloh and his contribution to taking skate culture in Ghana to a new level. Freedom Skatepark will then become the stage that will host artistic and athletic events such as workshops, mentoring programs, art exhibitions and skate competitions organized by Surf Ghana. Everything will serve to give the new generations of the capital the opportunity to give visibility and support the talents of skateboarding globally and participate in the next Olympic Games with an official skateboarding team.
The whole story of Freedom Park was born through the social channels of Surf Ghana. Just a year ago, the first promotional campaign for the construction of the park was launched online and was supported by Daily Paper and Off-White™ who helped introduce Ghanaian skate culture to the world. The project also saw the participation of international brands such as Vans, Tony's Chocolonely and AFD who helped to tell their audience about the project, giving visibility to surf Ghana's efforts. The latter, together with Wonders Around the World, gave life to the vision of Freedom Skatepark over 30 days, with the support of SAF Ghana (STL-Amandi Foundation) and the Ghanaian design studio Limbo Accra and Space Accra.
After the inauguration, Daily Paper will return to Accra in December to celebrate the evolution of the country's cultural scene. In addition to celebrating the opening of Freedom Skatepark, the brand will host a series of activations, collaborations and experiences with creatives, musicians and members of the local and international community. The first of these projects will be the opening of a pop-up store in the city that will be open from the end of December until January 15 and will host the collaboration of Daily Paper with the local brand Free the Youth. In addition, the Dutch brand will start a series of exclusive collaborations for the country with artists such as Smallgood, Daniel Jasper and with the Street Souk convention to be held in Nigeria on the occasion of the local football championship.
