After the divorce between Bottega Veneta and Daniel Lee a few days ago, the brand of the Kering group has announced the appointment of Matthieu Blazy as the new creative director of the brand. The news is certainly not a surprise, given the numerous rumors that pointed to him as Lee's natural heir at the helm of the brand.
Design director who arrived at Bottega's court in June last year after holding the same role at Calvin Klein in the Raf Simons era is among the Belgian designer's protégés. In the past, Blazy has also worked at Celine under the creative direction of Phoebe Philo and was designer at Margiela until Galliano's arrival in 2014 and is in many ways the most natural choice given the Kering group's habit of promoting figures already in the company. "Matthieu Blazy is an extraordinary talent to whom I am proud and excited to entrust the creative helm of our brand," said Leo Rongone, chief executive officer of the company. "Bottega Veneta has always been associated with signature craftsmanship and distinctive creativity. Matthieu's appointment will further strengthen the relevance of our brand and accelerate our growth, while preserving the values that are at the core of Bottega Veneta."
Among Blazy's goals will surely be to revive ready-to-wear sales, which currently represent a small percentage within the brand's overall sales. "There is no one else who could take the baton and interpret the Bottega Veneta brand in continuity with the recent past," an anonymous source told WWD according to which Blazy has the skills necessary to improve the men's collections.
