From the street to the catwalk, the story of the NY Yankees logo
How the NYPD logo on a nameplate has become a worldwide symbol
September 2nd, 2021
No matter what city in the world you live in, you can be sure that there will always be a NY Yankees logo next to you. Whether it's a t-shirt, a hat or any other item of clothing, what was born as a symbol of the baseball team soon detached from its sporting nature, becoming a symbol first of New York City and then of the spirit that this embodies in the collective imagination. What perhaps few people know is that those two stylized letters owe their birth to the police force of the American city and to Louis Tiffany, authorized by Big Bill Devery, co-owner of the team and chief of police, to create a plaque in memory of John McDowell, first body agent to die on duty. Although his purpose to start was something else, Devery soon understood the importance of that symbol capable of representing not only a baseball team, but also one of the most famous and fascinating cities in the world.

Also for this reason, the New York Yankess logo quickly went from being a symbol of a police force to a symbol of a baseball team and then becoming the emblem of an entire city inside and outside the borders of the United States. Before landing on the catwalks and in the lookbooks, the symbol of the New York Yankees became a pop icon making its appearance in cinema, on TV and above all in music: Jennifer Lopez first and Jay-Z then were the two main ambassadors of an object that has also passed through the heads of Macaulay Culkin, Spike Lee, David Beckham and Bill and Hilary Clinton. In 2013 Tom Cruise took it in 2077 in a scene from the sci-fi film Oblivion, making us imagine a future in which the Yankees logo had not lost its charm and relevance by underlining once again the process that had led to a simple cap to become a world cult object.
L'esordio nella moda
It was only a matter of time before the world of fashion and streetwear appropriated it by bringing it into that container of ideas and suggestions that is the fashion system. If the arrival in Fashion Week seemed too unnatural, the one in the world of streetwear was instead a natural consequence of its connection with the city of New York. In 2015 Supreme used the logo on some items of its collection, while a few months later Public School first and KITH then did the same. However, Kim Jones thought of it as a bridge between the world of streetwear and that of luxury, able in the collaboration between Supreme and Louis Vuitton in 2017 to further strengthen the link between fashion and baseball. However, Alessando Michele's inspiration was needed to bring the NY Yankees logo into the fashion system once and for all, making it part of the Pre-Fall and Fall / Winter 2018 Gucci collections in a final consecration of what was only originally a popular symbol. It is also for this reason that the announcement of a new collaboration with Supreme sounds a bit like a return to origins, starting from the streets and the city where everything was born.
