The perfect outfit for a summer in the mountains
Why swimming when you can climb?
June 18th, 2021
Spending the summer in the mountains is perhaps less popular than spending it chilling on the beach, but it certainly hides merits that are often ignored. Hiking without dying of cold is one of them, but also staying in contact with nature, surrounded by greenery, making the occasional visit to the lake or organizing a barbecue in the garden. It's a life perhaps less simple than that lived by the sea, which for this reason requires a certain preparation – especially when it comes to the outfits. Even the mountains stop smiling in front of an outfit that is too sloppy. The important thing will be to wear technical clothes but not too much, which let you guess that you take care of brands and details without letting it transpire that you have tried too hard. Especially in a year like ours, which was dominated by the gorpcore trend. Ease, in the mountains as elsewhere, remains the true sign of style.
Here are nss magazine tips on how to dress in the mountains in summer.
Easy T-shirts
If you are in the mountains in the warm season the first thing you will need will be a nice t-shirt. The essentials here is that it's a casual t-shirt: no one wants to stain a 500€ t-shirt with sweat and grass. The rule will therefore require simplicity but fun, few prints or writings and perhaps, if you feel imaginative, some hippy fantasy like tie-dye. For colours the rule is almost obvious: white and light colours so as not to succumb to the beating sun – often in the mountains, it's warmer than on the beach. Black remains acceptable, as long as the press is funny.
First pants rule: practicality
Throw elegant trousers, overly rigid jeans or tight shorts out of the window. The first rule of pants in the mountains is pockets. Both because panelling, comfortable fit and colour alternation evoke the best of gorpcore, and because, in the middle of hiking or walking, you will need pockets where you can store everything you need. Shorts are allowed, after all, it's hot, as long as they are not fragile and delicate: you need durable fabrics, neither too elegant nor too precious. The colourways to wear are easy: beige and dark green to make pendants with deep woods. An absolute ban for neon and ringing prints, the mountain requires relaxation even for your eyes.
The right soles for the hard terrain
Sneakers and technical boots are the souls of gorpcore aesthetics. And even though so many fashion brands produced their own versions of hiking boots last year, you don't want to drag expensive calfskin boots through brambles and rocky paths. Beautiful silhouettes, therefore, but also built to resist. The colours, in the wake of the minimalism that is returning to dominate the market, will be essential, while with construction you can experiment. Avoid the city sneaker, in any case, which could spoil you and make you take a nice twist if you were to fall down.
Hats, backpacks, bags & holders
The gorpcore trend would never have gone anywhere without the entire technical apparatus that usually completes its looks: first of all the hats, to avoid the insolations at high altitude, but also the very useful backpacks, which will have to have the right compartments and capacity. Even accessories to be applied to the belt, especially cell carriers, will be immensely useful to give you full freedom of movement.
