Kim Jones presented his Dior Pre-Fall 2019 collection
In Tokyo Japan working together with Sci-fi artist Hajime Sorayama
November 30th, 2018
After this summer's monumental Dior show during Paris fashion week, where Kim Jones presented his inaugural collection at the creative helm for the revered fashion house. The time came today for Kim Jones to premier, for the first time ever in Tokyo, Japan, the Dior Homme menswear pre-fall runway show. Inspired by his fall trip to Japan, Jones in this collection also worked with the legendary Japanese Sci-fi artist, Hajime Sorayama.
“A fashion show in Tokyo is the best way to present and celebrate my first Dior pre-fall men’s show. Japan is a magical country that I know quite well and that I love particularly for its incredible and unique culture, history and nature, which have always been very fascinating and a great source of inspiration to me.”

The show started by panning down over an immense statue of Sorayama’s iconic female android model, with the crowd sitting in a large circle around, soon an explosion of lasers lit up the stage with its large cherry blossom patterns and the show began. The collection was, to begin with, almost completely in monochromatic greys, whites and black, with splashes of subtle cherry blossom pink patterns on silk shirts. Before heading into more colorful yet still muted additions of purple, green, blue, and brown, with the occasional standout silver shine and iridescent glow. Consisting of jackets, trenches, and blazers with Japanese inspired kimono cuts and closings, the collection towards the end more fully embraced its futuristic almost techwear aesthetic with an iridescent jacket, utility vests, and high ankle boots. In the accessories department, were belts, waist bags, saddle bags, and caps that were once again punctuated by the innovative closing clasps and mechanism designed by ALYX’s Matthew M Williams. The show concluded once again with the laser spectacle and the resounding feeling that it is hard to think of any designer that is currently better than Kim Jones.
