The true/false Victoria's Secret Fashion Show's cultural approach
The "Nomadic Adventure" collection has caused chaos in China
November 24th, 2017
Cultural Approach: When someone uses elements, reproduces uses, of another one without permission. This can be considered offensive by the latter.
This theme has recently been 'reproposed' in occasion of the last Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, a runway of sensuality and beauty transformed into a real case involving media, politicians and newspapers around the world. Why? Simple: some of the models presented accessories decorated with beads and feathers that, in some way, evident or not, remind the tribal costumes of the Native Americans. And that's immediately a 'cultural appropriation'! scandal!
Analyzing the situation, one of the themes presented, the "Nomadic Adventure" collection, want to celebrate the uses of this culture, as has always been done on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (do you remember the tribute to China last year?) and, in any case, a dust is raised on these choices, exclusively choreographic, scenic and for nothing with offensive intent.
Victoria Secret's isn't new to this kind of accusation, we still remembered when in the distant 2012,the beautiful Karlie Kloss parade with a Native American-inspired headgear and turquoise jewellery, shocking everyone but for two very different reasons: for her lovely appearance and because her dress-code was accused of cultural appropriation, indeed she was cut for broadcasting.
In a historical period in which the constant struggle for equality, free expression and mutual respect are among the most suffered and claimed rights, in a tense, delicate historic period, is right to discuss and accuse everyone of everything?
Does freedom of expression and respect in this case go hand in hand?
